Note the project is now called "Xymon" due to legal reasons.
There is no best installation. If you have an RPM of xymon, use it and if it works you're all set!
If not you will need to compile it. You can probably use the CentOS guide I wrote.

The source code has scripts that create rpm packages for your build. I've always used those.

An infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar. The first one orders a beer. The second orders half a beer. The third, a quarter of a beer. The bartender says "You're all idiots", and pours two beers.

Vewy intewesting. I'd never noticed makerpm.sh before. Eventually I'll have to make time to figure out how to use it, e.g. whether you need to run the configure script first, how it handles xymon-apache.conf and aliasing/soft-links for folders, etc.
I notice that the last thing it tries to do is to put the rpms in ../rpm/pkg. It doesn't create the pkg folder nor is it there from unpacking the tarball, so the command fails. The rpms end up left in a couple of folders under ./rpmbuild relative to the top level of the tarball unpack.

Firstly, I would wonder about the wisdom of using Fedora 12 for deployment of a monitoring system. If a production environment, you would probably be better off using CentOS or RHEL. If this is a "play" system, then you could install from source ....

A number of distributions ship Xymon packages. For example, I maintain Xymon and devmon in Mandriva. The Mandriva packages rebuild adequately on CentOS/RHEL, and should probably work on Fedora as well (if you load the compatibility macros).
A repo for CentOS5 / RHEL 5 is available here: http://staff.telkomsa.net/packages/rhel5/xymon/
SRPMS are here: http://staff.telkomsa.net/packages/SRPMS/xymon/
(or on any Mandriva mirror, and in Mandriva svn).
