Hello all, It has been quite a while since I visited here and I could use some help. Can somebody direct me to where and how I get or obtain or generate the hobbit client for a linux machine? I can't seem to remember. Thanks
Kevin
Kevin,
It's in the same source package - ./config.client IIRC

Josh, Thanks for the reply. I got the package, compiled it for the client, edited the hobbitclient.cfg o point to the hobbit server, but I see no client data on the server. The client is not passing data to the server. Where did I go wrong?

The server must have the same host listed in its bb-hosts config file. Simply add the host like so...
1.3.3.7 newclient.domain.tld #
or if it can't be ping'ed...
1.3.3.7 newclient.domain.tld # noconn
Then the WWW pages will use the data it is receiving from the host. I believe at this point the client is transferring the data the the server, however, the WWW pages aren't showing anything to acknowledge them!

No client should have bbgen, bbtest, hobbitd - those are processes on the hobbit server to do its tests for your hosts. Can you send a screen capture of your WWW output?

Okay, did that...not any better:
I'm getting even less (that was why I separated it in the first place) and still no CPU/disk utilization.

Can you do the following on the Hobbit server?
hostname
cat /etc/hosts
ifconfig <primary interface>
ps auxw | grep hobbit
Also, you should have the following in the hobbitlaunch.cfg file: [hobbitclient] ENVFILE /var/hobbit/client/etc/hobbitclient.cfg NEEDS hobbitd CMD /var/hobbit/client/bin/hobbitclient.sh LOGFILE $BBSERVERLOGS/hobbitclient.log INTERVAL 5m

? runtime.cfg? I've never seen that file. Did you compile from source, or are you using a packaged (i.e. rpm) version of Hobbit?
In any case, BBDISP refers back to BBSERVERIP, and BBDISPLAYS is usually left blank. In my hobbitserver.cfg file, BBSERVERHOSTNAME is the FQDN that the physical server is called, and BBSERVERIP is the IP of its public interface. In your case, it should be "DoyleBrunson.AILife.Com<http://doylebrunson.ailife.com/>" and 10.2.0.99 <http://127.0.0.1/>, respectively. Changing this requires a restart of Hobbit.

RPM (yum actually). That file is referred to in /usr/libexec/hobbit/client/etc/hobbitclient.cfg:
Environment settings for the Hobbit client.
include /var/lib/hobbit-client/runtime.cfg
CONFIGCLASS="$BBOSTYPE" # Default configuration class for logfiles
PATH="/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/etc" # PATH setting for the client scripts.
You normally dont need to modify anything below here
BBPORT="1984" # Portnumber where hobbitd listens
BBHOME="$HOBBITCLIENTHOME" # Directory for the Hobbit client files

? runtime.cfg? I've never seen that file. Did you compile from source, or are you using a packaged (i.e. rpm) version of Hobbit?
In any case, BBDISP refers back to BBSERVERIP, and BBDISPLAYS is usually left blank. In my hobbitserver.cfg file, BBSERVERHOSTNAME is the FQDN that the physical server is called, and BBSERVERIP is the IP of its public interface. In your case, it should be " DoyleBrunson.AILife.Com <http://doylebrunson.ailife.com/> " and 10.2.0.99 <http://127.0.0.1/> , respectively. Changing this requires a restart of Hobbit.

The server is reporting itself back as "DoyleBrunson.AILife.Com<http://doylebrunson.ailife.com/> ". The bb-hosts entry should thus be:
10.2.0.99 <http://127.0.0.1/> hobbit.ailife.com # bbd ssh ftp http://DoyleBrunson.ailife.com/ apache=http://DoyleBrunson.ailife.com/server-status?auto TRENDS:*,apache:apache|apache1|apache2|apache3 CLIENT:<http://doylebrunson.ailife.com/apache=http://DoyleBrunson.ailife.com/server-...:*,apache:apache%7Capache1%7Capache2%7Capache3>DoyleBrunson.AILife.Com NAME:Hobbit <http://doylebrunson.ailife.com/>
This will cause the host show up as "Hobbit" on the Hobbit web page, and the host name itself is called "hobbit.ailife.com" internally to Hobbit. The key is that "CLIENT:DoyleBrunson.AILife.Com" is required, because the Hobbit client process is reporting itself back to the Hobbit server process as though the host name were "DoyleBrunson..." (I know, that sounds a little confusing).

As I have posted in a previous thread, there is no need for separate bb-hosts entries for the Hobbit server and client. You can merge those two bb-hosts entries into one line as follows:
10.2.0.99 <http://127.0.0.1/> Hobbit # bbd ssh ftp http://DoyleBrunson.ailife.com/ apache=http://DoyleBrunson.ailife.com/server-status?auto TRENDS:*,apache:apache|apache1|apache2|apache3 CLIENT:<http://doylebrunson.ailife.com/apache=http://DoyleBrunson.ailife.com/server-...:*,apache:apache%7Capache1%7Capache2%7Capache3><http://doylebrunson.ailife.com/apache=http://DoyleBrunson.ailife.com/server-status?autoTRENDS:*,apache:apache%7Capache1%7Capache2%7Capache3> Hobbit.ailife.com <http://hobbit.ailife.com/>
And if you want BB clients to report properly, I believe you also need # BBDISPLAY BBPAGER BBNET
For the server entry I get: bbd, conn, ftp, http, info, info, ssh and
trends
For the client entry I get: bbgen, bbtest, conn, hobbitd, info and trends
My bb-hosts:

If I add a new host I get conn, info and trend. If I install the client and have it report to the server, I start collecting data for cpu, disk, memory.

Hmmm....from the Doc's Hobbit doesn't use these:
BBDISPLAY, BBPAGER, BBNET are compatibility settings for extensions written for Big Brother. Hobbit doesn't use these, but puts them in the bb-hosts file to avoid problems if you mix Hobbit and Big Brother modules.
Would updating the hobbit-clients.cfg with a:
HOST=hobbit.ailife.com
:
:
DISK (whatever)
LOAD (whatever)
:
:
(would this help? Did you do this?)

10.2.0.99 <http://127.0.0.1/> Hobbit # bbd ssh ftp http://DoyleBrunson.ailife.com/ apache=http://DoyleBrunson.ailife.com/server-status?auto TRENDS:*,apache:apache|apache1|apache2|apache3 CLIENT: <http://doylebrunson.ailife.com/apache=http:/DoyleBrunson.ailife.com/ser ver-status?autoTRENDS:*,apache:apache%7Capache1%7Capache2%7Capache3> <http://doylebrunson.ailife.com/apache=http:/DoyleBrunson.ailife.com/ser ver-status?autoTRENDS:*,apache:apache%7Capache1%7Capache2%7Capache3> Hobbit.ailife.com <http://hobbit.ailife.com/>
And if you want BB clients to report properly, I believe you also need # BBDISPLAY BBPAGER BBNET
For the server entry I get: bbd, conn, ftp, http, info, info, ssh and trends
For the client entry I get: bbgen, bbtest, conn, hobbitd, info and trends
My bb-hosts:
127.0.0.1 Hobbit.ailife.com # bbd ssh ftp http://DoyleBrunson.ailife.com/ apache=http://DoyleBrunson.ailife.com/server-status?auto TRENDS:*,apache:apache|apache1|apache2|apache3 <http://DoyleBrunson.ailife.com/apache=http:/DoyleBrunson.ailife.com/ser ver-status?autoTRENDS:*,apache:apache%7Capache1%7Capache2%7Capache3>

Kevin
