On the topic of Top-Posting...
In the Gmail world, many times things that are replaced with
- Show Quoted Text -
in an alternate, smaller, insignificant font sometimes don't grab your eyes when responding. Sorry for that.
Further, I'm on about six lists. I have one that despises top posting, one that despises bottom posting, and another that despises interstitial posting.
I'm not motivated to keep up with it all.
If it's a big enough problem, then I'll just stop posting altogether if that's what the community wants.

If you're still using Pine then you're going to feel consequences a decade after technology grows. It's like people complaining Windows 95 won't support VMware VIC. Technology moves, keep up.
I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but the reality of the situation is things change.

I don't use PINE, but I still read English from top to bottom. Unless *that* changes, I don't see how the technology used is relevant.

Apologies to Gerald for any offense. I'm a dinosaur. But I certainly keep up with technology. This is done with Squirrelmail for convenience, but I have a plugin for "old timey" quoting for Outlook at the office.

When I used Thunderbird or Outlook, it clearly pushes towards top posting. The cursor is at the top and the signature is just above the replied text. In Gmail it is the same way and has an option to bottom post. Hotmail and Yahoo I'd imagine is the same.
I agree you can copy/paste and type in different parts of the reply, but it seems to me as though that's out of the topic.

Top posting? Bottom Posting? Who cares? Really? What are we trying to achieve here? Stop and think about it for a moment.
This is a forum for us to share knowledge, experience and know-how with each other. This forum is kept alive by posts from people who give up their time to post. They don't have to post, they do it as a favour. A donation of time, as it were. Complaining about how people post to this forum, is like giving a hundred bucks to charity, in ten dollar notes, and they complain the want two fifties instead. Would you give again? I know I wouldn't.
Most people on this list are pretty smart, and know how to scroll up, and some even know how to scroll down. You get a response to your question posted by somebody who is doing us all a favour. Take it and be happy. Don't complain about how you got it. That's just being ungrateful.

I think most of the arguments against bottom (or interleaved) posting are based on the false assumptions that the entire message and signature will be preserved and the reply will be under that, causing you to scroll. Indeed some people do this, but it's inappropriate.
When done correctly, interleaved posting doesn't require any scrolling (unless it's a big thread). It just requires you to read things in a natural order.
As for the argument that top-posting makes it easier to follow a discussion…
- I think that's partially based on the above assumption.
- That may be true when you're right in the middle of a discussion, but think about a person reading it in the archives a month from now (whether it be you or someone else). They don't have the context fresh in their mind like you do.
-- Rob McBroom <http://www.skurfer.com/>
If you need something, that doesn't mean someone else owes it to you.
You have to "opt-in" to bottom posting configurations in most modern email clients. The industry as a whole makes "top-posting-friendly" clients, and by and large the majority of said clients will be setup in this way by default.
Now, as for those on many different lists, it's so hard to keep track of which list wants what in posting terms that it's simply undoable.
It *IS* a religious war (vi vs emacs, anyone?) It *IS* not important in the grand scheme of things. It *IS* a waste to argue about it.
Again, I'm eternally grateful for all the help I get on this list and am more than happy to share things when I write or discover them. That's what is important (and should remain important) about this list.
I will not be (top)posting on this topic any further. I think it's wasting all our time at this point.

The changes aren't in SMTP or POP, but rather the client applications. Clients today are predominately top posting. Clients years ago used bottom posting.
So this decade of technological progress you were referring to is the default location of the cursor? ;)

Regards Vernon
P.S. This response has also been top-posted for your convenience.

I think I started this, with what I thought to be a rather innocuous parenthetical "insert top posting rant boilerplate here" instead of any actual complaint about the practice.
I didn't intend to kick up a controversy, and I've apologized. But neither was I asking a question, nor am I ungrateful for the information I get by mostly lurking here.
As Humpty Dumpty said, "There's glory for you!".
