Hello,
Sorry if this is horribly ignorant. I'm rather new to the whole network administration biz. I've got alerts functioning nicely, but I'd like to change the text of the email that's sent out. Is there a cfg file somewhere I'm missing that I could edit?
Thank you, -Scott
Can you give an example of how you would like to change it?

I'd like to change the url that shows at the bottom. Currently it's something like
http://localhost/hobbit-cgi/bb-hostsvc.sh?HOST=blahblahblah
I'd like to change "localhost" to "my.hostname.edu"
Thanks, -Scott

That's a matter of the hobbit server's hostname and/or webpage configuration. Can you do the following, and post the results:
hostname
cat /etc/hosts
cat <hobbit root>/server/etc/hobbitserver.cfg | egrep
"BBSERVERHOSTNAME|BBSERVERWWWNAME"
Odds are, BBSERVERWWWNAME is probably set to "localhost". Changing it to " my.hostname.edu" should fix that (restarting Hobbit will be required).

How many people actually use regular old email Hobbit alerts? I've found it far superior to have bbtray or the summary page open on a second monitor.

I still use email alerts. It's easy for a lazy admin to ignore the summary page and just close it if they don't like what they see. Much harder to ignore emails. ;-)

True, but at least there's an auditable trail, and I can go back and say "see, the admins were alerted about it!"

Especially if they all go to the team responsible, and that team's management. And my team (Security) gets all alerts for production systems, regardless who is the business owner. :)
And I've had folks claim they didn't get alert emails before. Had to whip out the notification.log file on them.

I see. I know when we got the emails the first reaction was to switch tabs in Firefox to get more detail. The email was always deleted, rarely read. Glad to see it works out well for someone though!

Ahh, I love that notification.log file. There's nothing more satisfying that whipping that log out and then backing it up with the maillogs to prove they definitely received the emails and either deleted them or spam-filtered them. The look they have (or silence, if on the phone) is priceless when they think they have a way to "prove" Hobbit needs to be replaced, only to learn that they can't sneak anything past it.
