Well, FWIW, I managed to compile the hobbit client on Windows 98 using cygwin and it does something. Well, it runs the scripts and creates the msg.txt but I never saw it reported back to the display even though I see it connected (or try to connect) to the 1984 port. I have to do more research why it's not showing up.
