With all the discussion about icons, I figured I would open another can-of-worms (so to speak).
I don't know if this has been discussed before (I could not find anything in my searches). As part of getting buyoff from managers we changed the look of hobbit to be a little less "dark". We only make one change to the code (to make highlighting of the line work), all other changes were to the web/www files.
Major Changes:
- Moved menu down to make room for 'company banner'
- changed colors (background/font/etc)
- Removed background (we were annoyed by the "blink" everytime the screen refreshed)
- Added status "line" between company banner & menu, also below the footer.
- Added highlight function: highlights line that mouse is over
- changed icons
- changed footer
I wanted to see what others thought of our effort. Also, I wanted to see if others think it would be worth the time to make hobbit 'skins' (never really cared for that term).
I am willing to help in any effort.
See attached. (sanitized version).

We did some GUI change also. We use yui-ext as the frontend to replace tigra. Will check into sourceforge once the personal/company info is taken out.

that is very impressive and looks very clean. as to skinning, henrik had mentioned in a past email thread that bbgen, the piece of hobbit that generated html, is not the most updated piece of hobbit. that people were most welcomed to create their own web 'frontend' to hobbit. i believe that thread then moved into the configuration files of hobbit, since bb-hosts defines both hosts to be monitored and the display layout. talk of how to reorganize hobbit configuration files ensued and the topic fizzeled out. i think henrik mentioned that he was considering a change in bb-hosts or how hobbit is configured, and if a 3rd party person was to write a alternative web interface, the configs would really need to be nailed down first.
as to your skin the only piece i would really miss is the background page color. seems yours is always white. maybe change the top blue swirly image to different colors.. dun know.

This is very cool. If possible share your modifications on the Shire.

There has been some discussion over the years but I don't think anything significant. I've always liked the idea of a "brandable" hobbit. We could then add a new "themes" section to The Shire. :-)
It would be nice if you could just point to a theme folder or maybe just symlink www to a theme. If you could write up a tutorial on what you did that could go up on The Shire...that'd be awesome. It'd be really awesome if we could make it brandable to the sub-page level for those of us who monitor multiple customer's sites.

I like the term "themes" more than skins. I will use that from now on. :-)
I will try to get together 'diffs' list or something to show what changes I have made. My biggest weakness in these changes is with css. I feel this is the best way to maintain consistency on all pages.
I have tested my theme on different types of pages:
- Main (ok)
- Non-Green ("X events received in the past Y minutes" box has 'dark' colors still)
- Critial Systems (ok)
- Sub-pages (ok)
- Reports: --- Eventlog (ok) --- Availability (ok) --- Snapshot (ok) --- Config (ok, but page is hard to read [busy]) --- Metrics (ok) --- Ghost clients (menu not working, not sure what is so different about this report)
- All Admin Menu functions (ok)
- All Help menus (no header / menu / footer, bug in hobbit?)
The most complicated part of the changes I have done is the menu move. Took quite a bit of trial-and-error to get that part to work.

Hi Robert
You are much like a bikini with this. What you reveal is suggestive, but what you conceal is vital. (With apologies to Aaron Levenstein)
You have shown us what can be achieved, but kept hidden the secret of how to achieve it. I am sure I speak for many on the list, when I ask, please let us know the changes you have made to achieve this wonderful look.
Thanks Vernon

lol. That was not my intention. I just wanted to see if people thought it was worth the effort to put together my changes. When I sent the email I had not bundled thing together yet.
I just finished creating a tar-ball. You can download it from the link below: http://www.uunc.net/hobbitmon/blue-theme.tar.gz (Blue Theme hobbit)
There is a readme file that explains how to install it. Please let me know any suggestions / comments, etc
I will be sending a seperate email for a patch to hobbit. This will allow the 'selection' (highlight) of lines when you mouse over them.
Enjoy!
