Moving from BB to Hobbit
Hi Hobbits,
I have read the BB to Hobbit migration guide, and I have a
question that I don't think was covered by the document directly. I have both a BB and test Hobbit servers up and running. I have a few of the monitored clients sending updates to both servers as a test. Now that I am convinced that Hobbit is ready to be put in production, I would like to switch the two, i.e., just switch the hostnames and IP's. and put the hobbit server in the BB server's place. This would save us from having to change the BBDISPLAY host on all the monitored clients. All of the Hobbit server software was compiled and built on the test system with the test name and IP. Can I just change the IP and hostname on the test machine to the production server and bring the BB server down and be OK, or will I have to re-compile everything once I switch them?
Thanks in advance,
Jeff

That's usually what I do. As long as your sure all of your parts are in place everything should just work... we'll keep our fingers crossed for you... :)

Check the beginning of your hobbitserver.cfg file, there is a reference to the hostname and IP that you entered during configuration there.

Henrik,
So I just need to change the IP and hostname in the
hobbitserver.cfg file and I should be OK? I guess the reason why I asked the question is because I just happened to notice that the current IP and hostname were compiled into nearly every binary in HOBBITHOME/server/bin. Not sure the significance of that. Probably over-thinking it.
Thanks
Jeff

I did this already in the past. I've changed the IP in the Makefile and then recompiled the software...

No, you are right. Recompiling is the best thing to do. I got bit by this at the same stage doing the same thing you are doing. Steve.

The compiled-in setting provides a default, if the setting is not found in hobbitserver.cfg. So changing it there should suffice.
E.g. the pre-compiled binary packages of Hobbit have a built-in setting of 127.0.0.1/localhost - and they work fine when you configure them with a real IP/hostname.

Where is the BB/Hobbit migration guide to be found? I just went through the shire and the main hobbit page and didn't see it.
Thanks
