You could have a server run the script (cron or xymon client clientlaunch.cfg) and output to a file, and then monitor the file and go RED if it doesn't say "MySQL connection successful" and then you don't have to parse the XML or get really complicated. You can also have a monitor on the file to go RED if the file hasn't changed in X minutes to alert you that the test isn't running anymore.
