Hi everyone,
Due to some frustrations with the existing clients I have decided to have a go at rolling my own. In the process I have run into some strange behavior with the server side data collector/processor that I've been struggling with for over a week now that I could really use some help with. I've been searching the man pages and the email archives and haven't been able to find anything like what I've run into.
My first try with sending reports was with the CPU column. After figuring out that the server was crashing because my lines were too long, I am able to send in a complete report as verified by the client data screen. However, the data collector isn't processing it correctly for reasons that I am unable to determine. First, once it gets past the last line of the cpu section on the web page there are a few processes that repeat. Second, the first line of text containing the up/load/procs message isn't bold like in other hosts. Third, the CPU load number is never added to the RRD. I have run several tcpdumps on other clients to capture their submissions and I was able to fix some problems by comparing mine to those, but now mine looks identical from what I can tell.
Here is what the top and bottom of the pages look like:
The last 6 lines are duplicates of the lines above. That is not included in the data that was sent though, so how is it getting it? Also, why isn't the value being picked up for the RRD?

I can send them in as client side reports and all is well, but it doesn't work when using the data collector/client message.
Oh... also, how do I pull the client side config from the xymon server?

I have... there's all kinds of information there on interacting with Xymon, including building your own server modules and custom tests. Nothing to help with interacting with the ones that come with the standard build and install of the server portion of Xymon.
I can send in client reports of all kinds... but I am having specific problems with the formatting for the client data collector channel on the Xymon server. I can't find any information anywhere on that, or what patterns the server is looking for, etc. I have the option of doing everything client side, but why should I when that awesome module is already there on the server if I can just figure out why it doesn't like my formatting? In the end I may have to do just that though, or more likely just give up if I can't get any help with interacting with the stock server channels. I refuse to spend hours trying to reinvent multiple wheels. :-(

I have also written a custom client for powerHA clustering on AIX.

My client OS is Win7. The script is written in AutoIt and is, right now at least, a proof of concept that I'd be embarrassed to share publicly as it's pretty bad. The output of the script is between the lines below. I just open a TCP connection to port 1984 and send the lines across. The file is written in *nix format with LF at the end of each line so I don't have to alter it during the send operation.

You can either use the formats of existing supported clients, or read the source to see what formats are supported, or contribute code to support your format.
In the end I may have to do just that though, or more likely just give up if I can't get any help with interacting with the stock server channels. I refuse to spend hours trying to reinvent multiple wheels. :-(

Got to understand the formats myself first. :) Although I think it's more a question of formatting of my data versus the actual data format, IE sections.
I'm trying to make a simple client of my own with AutoIt due to some frustrations with supporting Windows 2008 clients with Xymon. I'm trying to match the format of the win32 based clients... that's where my frustration is coming in. I've matched the format down to the last carriage return by doing dumps on the data reporting in from other win32 based clients and comparing them to my own, but it's not being read the same by the collector module on the server for reasons that I cannot understand. If I send it in as a client status report everything works perfectly with no modifications to the report data itself.
I tried the PS client and the BBWin client. The PS client is too heavy and in its current revision is unreliable in my environment. We were conversing on the list and David Baldwin was going to work on it, but even if it's fixed so it's reliable it would still be too heavy for my environment. In the instances where I've loaded it the users have seen too much impact. The BBWin client doesn't report networking data correctly on Win2008 and has been abandoned for years. That means I have no way to monitor Windows 2008, and I have more coming online daily.
