Goodbye "Hobbit", hello "Xymon"
Greetings!
As I wrote some time ago, I was contacted by the owners of the "Hobbit" trademark back in June.
Several names have been suggested by you on the mailing list (see http://www.hswn.dk/hobbiton/2008/08/msg00193.html), but the decision has now been made.
As of today, the official name is "Xymon" (pronounced just like "Simon").
At the moment this renaming has not caused much of a change, but it will be implemented over the coming weeks.
The Sourceforge project URL remains at https://sf.net/projects/hobbitmon/ due to project renamings currently being suspended on Sourceforge. Once the suspension is lifted, however, there is a queued request to rename the project. It will then be available at https://sf.net/projects/xymon/
The mailing list address remains "hobbit at hswn.dk" for the moment. A new "Xymon" mailing list will be setup, but this will be announced separately.
The demo website http://www.xymon.com/ is active. The old address - www.hobbitmon.com - will remain in place for some time, but no longer than August 2009.
Changes to documentation, code, webpages inside the Hobbit monitor etc. will be happening over the next couple of weeks, and will be fully implemented in the upcoming release.
Best regards, Henrik

It's really just a name that popped into my head one morning, and it sounded "right".
It also fits with the criteria I listed back in August http://www.hswn.dk/hobbiton/2008/08/msg00193.html : No clashes with Tolkien or existing book/movie characters; it isn't trademarked; it's short and easily pronouncable; and the relevant domains were all (mostly) available. (xymon.net wasn't, but I can live with that).
That it ends with "mon" is also a plus, that seems reasonable for "mon"itoring software.
And I can just hear everyone shout "what does Xymon say?" when there's an outage. Sorry 'bout that, if you happen to have a Simon on your admin team :-)
Finally, the ultimate sys-admin - the BOFH ! - was created by a Simon: http://www.theregister.co.uk/odds/bofh/
(Just joking about that last one).

Hey Henrik,
The name sounds good, i will have a special feeling to it, for various different reasons. I am looking forward for many more things/changes/turnovers with Xymon.

Hi Henrik,
It just happened that my name is Simon, which in my mother tongue is spelt as "Szymon".
I can see guys from my sys team start blaming me for every single problem once they find out (and a face of my director hearing my name during any glitches - he will soon start relating my name with technical problems - it will be all my fault) ;D !
Cheers :>

Hey Henrik,
I did a whois lookup on xymon.net and it comes up with invalid registrant information. Only the technical contact info is legit (and it's network solutions). I suspect this domain may actually be available if you ask them to look into it. It really looks like a cybersquatting.

Lawyers might argue that point as it's referred to in the novels as "The Shire". However, it's not really the lawyers that are as concerning as it is to keep aligned with the new name...although, it's not like the Deadcat guys were the least bit concerned there.

Too bad, now Ive got another buch of "banned" web sites and mailling list to try and get security to allow. I lost the searsh funtion last time; got them to "approve" http://www.hswn.dk/hobbiton/ and can nest down but our LOVELY filter software give :Access Denied (content_filter_denied) on search. Im not going to bother, retirement is soon! But is there any chance that next version will be out before im banned"?

Good choice Henrik!
Happy birthday to Xymon... and thank you "hobbit" for helping us on everyday doings..
Regards, -wm
"Mozilla" was the original project code name for NetscapeNavigator and, according to some of the documentation, the correct pronunciation of "Netscape". See http://vdict.com/Mozilla,6,0,0.html
So I guess we can label is Xymon and pronounce it "hobbit" !! :-)
BTW I actually remember seeing this ! Believe it was on the intro page or download page
