This is something that's always amused me - if I've got an email2SMS service set up, how do I get the SMS to tell me that my mail server or mail provider or connectivity's gone down?
Personally I use SMS_Client to send SMS directly via the POTS for critical alerts.

It isn't SMS, but I use a freeware package called "qpage" to send text alerts. You just have to get the providers for your cell phones/pagers to give you their "TAP" number. Fortunately, all of mine are Verizon. Don't know if this thing is still out there on the 'net, though. I've had it for years.

Indeed ...
Personally I use SMS_Client to send SMS directly via the POTS for critical alerts.
GSM modems in the form of USB sticks are extremely common around here (don't know about the US, but I'd suspect you have them also). Stick one or two of those on your Xymon server, and add a bit of software to interface it via Xymon's "script" alert mechanism - voila, alerting that doesn't rely on your Internet-connection or the availability of a mailserver.
I use the "smstools" package from Debian Linux to manage the GSM modem. Works fine, only problem is that the modems have a bad habit of going into a "sleep" mode that requires reloading the driver before they wake up. Probably a specific hardware issue with these modems, but since I have a work-around it isn't much of a problem.
For bonus points I interfaced with Postscript for a home-made mail->sms gateway.
Regards, Henrik
I've heard of people doing that using gnokii to talk over serial port to an old Nokia phone.

Yep, did try that here at home. But our datacenter guys didn't like the idea of a cell phone lying around in the bottom of my server rack.

Why not just try to integrate it with something like Twilio.com<http://Twilio.com>? It's $.01 per message, but you could also do things like automated voice alerts too. A simple PHP POST is all it takes. It's what we use.

I have the opposite problem - we're not allowed to plug in USB sticks, but I might get away with a phone on a serial port. :-)

What?!? "qpage" not complicated enough? Sheesh! It is easy-cheesy if your providers will give you their "TAP" phone number. I've never had a problem with getting that info...just a few phone calls. And all you need is a regular modem.

If you don't have hardware to send SMS yourself, look around at your local Telcos and ISPs. Many of these companies, for a small fee, offer an email to SMS service. Here, we have a facility where we can use the unix mail system to send an SMS via a local telco. I then use something like echo "$Message" | mailx ${myMobileNumber}@mytelco.com
Hope that helps.

Hi Vernon,
Thanks for the reply.
I dont want to use 3rd party email to sms service.
If the link goes down, xymon will loose the ability to send alert.
I want to use a mobile or gms modem.
Anyone knows which tool is the best for this purpose?
I'm trying gnokii at the moment.

I've used gnokii in the past to great success. The only thing it doesn't do is handle queuing of messages - a temporary drop in signal means the alert is lost. So I interfaced Xymon with an postfix-to-gnokii gateway, and of course postfix handles queueing very well. Info here:
