Hi all.
I am really struggling to understand how to monitor msgs in xymon. I have read the man pages over anhd over and nothing I am doing seems to work.
In the client I have the following files in ~/client/etc
client-local.cfg: log:/var/log/messages:4096
localclient.cfg: LOG /var/log/messages warn COLOR=red
The actual msgs report in the xymon web page says
" System logs at Fri May 30 10:29:38 BST 2014 : No log data available The client did not report any logfile data "
I need a dummies guide to msgs monitoring!
If anyone could provide such a beast i would be immensely grateful.

Is your xymon setup in central mode or local mode?
By default xymon is setup in central mode.
So you'd want this in the client-local.cfg and the analysis.cfg on the server.

Ah, you have a very old version of xymon running then. In the future, let us know what version you are running.
So, I can’t remember which file it is. How soon we forget. It must be hobbit-clients.cfg is the old name for analysis.cfg.

I treied to find the version of xymon but cioldn;t find anythuing obvuious - apologies.
That entry is in hobbit-clients.cfg already

This probably means that your client doesn't know to report the file data back to the Xymon server. Is your client host configured to run in central mode? Assuming it is, check the Hobbit temp directory (on the client host) for two files, one called logfetch.<hostname>.cfg and the other called logfetch.<hostname>.status. The "status" file should have an entry for your messages file. The "cfg" file should have the entire hobbit-clients.cfg section associated with this host (including comments and blank lines).
Note that it can take up to 15 minutes for changes in hobbit-clients.cfg to be reflected in these two files.
If you have neither of these files, you might be running in client mode rather than central mode. Or there might be an error in your hobbitclient.log file.
Once these files are looking OK, the messages file details should start showing up in your client data. On any network test page, click on the [Client data] link at the bottom of the page, and then search for a "msgs" section like this:
