How do I suppress a msgs alert status for a particular client in 4.3.28?

Ive tried #nomsgs in the hosts.cfg entry.  I've also tried NOCOLUMNS:msgs

But both of them make no difference - the msgs alert is still showing .  I want nothing there at all :-) cheers ian
