Could you use an email-to-SMS gateway, instead (i.e. the SMS email address of the device you wish to notify)?

Hi,
email2SMS gateways are less reliable IMHO. I used to use a SMS-Modem in my former company until last summer. I will check for the brand in the archives tonight and post the details.

Martin

Hi,
I promised to send more information about the GSM Modem I used, but unfortunately the manufacturer stopped producing anything alike. I used a FALCOM SAMBA 55 (Old product page at http://www.falcom.de/products/discontinued-items/samba5556/ )
Sorry for the bad news on this. Their modems were well supported and reliable.

I suspect just about any GSM USB data connector could be used.
I've had good luck with the Sierra Wireless USB305's - I dumped a pre-paid AT&T sim card in there and it worked fine.

Don't know if it's any use to you - but I use a standard modem (on our UPS), down a standard POTS line, to talk to an SMS gateway.
The software is called "SMS_CLIENT"; I don't have a download link to hand but I think I still have the tar-ball.
It uses the TAP protocol.
Might be of use.

OMG, that's a blast from the past! Last updated more than a decade ago - I thought the source code would have been lost, but found it at: http://smsclient.sourcearchive.com/
I moved on from dial-up modems a looooong time go, replacing with Gnokii and GSM/3G mobile phones. These have the advantage that they don't require the POTS to be working, which might be a problem if a PBX circuit fails. Also, a 3G phone is probably cheaper than a USB modem.
