Hello All,
We presented Hobbit to our new director today, in hopes of getting it more widely utilized(he's also looking for a solution to monitor applications running on windows servers on our network, some of which have a serious failure rate.) We have been using it to monitor the UNIX/Big Iron side of the house for about 6 years now, but could never grow it outside of that, for various reasons (free=no support, non-acceptance of unix based products from our windows admins, etc). He really was impressed with Hobbit, and said it's the first time he's seen a presentation where someone wasn't asking for any money and the product was already implemented.
During the presentation, he asked who else is using BB/Hobbit. There used to be a client list on the bb4.net page, which is no longer there. So I figured I'd solicit the list to see who else is using Hobbit or BB (commercial or free), to answer the only question he asked that I couldn't.
Thank you
Al Jeffcoat

Jeff,
I work for Cisco Systems Inc (Cisco Networking Academy), and implemented BB as soon as I assumed my position. I have a test Hobbit server up, and will be migrating to it as soon as it is out of RC stage. I am monitoring Linux, Solaris, and Windows servers with BB/Hobbit. Don't forget that you can get support for BB now, although I don't know if they would support just the client side. In my experience, the mailing lists, particularly the archives, are all the support you really need :)
I also implemented BB at my last job with Qwest Communications, Inc. I believe they are still using it and are evaluating Hobbit as well.

Charles is right. Our team within Qwest Communications Inc. have been using BB for more than 3 years and recently migrated to Hobbit almost as soon as it become RC1. We monitor over 2000 nodes (host.service) for over 300 servers 24/7 and all of them are Solaris SPARC. We also use it to generate SLA report for my director
Thanks

BB (by default?) displays 2 disks graphs, the first one (disk) shows the percentage used, and the other (disk1) shows the actual total used in megabytes of each partition. How do I activate the disk1 graph?
I tried changing "disk" in the below url to "disk1" and all I got was a page with missing graphs.
http://myhobbithost.com/hobbit-cgi/hobbitgraph.sh?host=myhost&service=disk&f...
To clarify, my exact questions are:
- How do I add the disk1 graph so it is shown in addition to the normal disk graph when you click a disk service?
- How do I add the disk1 graph so that it is displayed in the trends section?
I assume that part of the answer is adding a disk1 entry to hobbitgraph.cfg and to the GRAPHS section of hobbitserver.cfg (or would it be to the LARRDS section as "disk1=disk"?

As far as I know, you can't.

Did you try adding a line like this in your bb-hosts? (for the host in question):
"LARRD:*,disk:disk|disk1"

Hmm why not? If its a valid graph type, I don't see why it cant display it as well?

I didn't try that, since I don't see any definition for disk1 in hobbitgraphs.cfg. If nobody offers a definitive answer I will give it a shot and report success or failure :)

That's another way of doing it, on a per-host basis. And yes - it is confusing that bb-hosts uses the "LARRD" keyword. I should have called it GRAPHS back when I did the bbgen work.

Cool...how about for all hosts? :-)

It's not too late to fix that, since Hobbit is still in RC ;-)

Right, and this is the part that would make the graphs work with the URL you tried. This definition should do it:
[disk1] FNPATTERN disk(.*).rrd TITLE Disk Utilization YAXIS Used DEF:p at RRDIDX@=@RRDFN@:used:AVERAGE LINE2:p at RRDIDX@#@COLOR@:@RRDPARAM@ -u 100 -l 0 GPRINT:p at RRDIDX@:LAST: \: %5.1lf (cur) GPRINT:p at RRDIDX@:MAX: \: %5.1lf (max) GPRINT:p at RRDIDX@:MIN: \: %5.1lf (min) GPRINT:p at RRDIDX@:AVERAGE: \: %5.1lf (avg)\n
- How do I add the disk1 graph so it is shown in addition to the normal disk graph when you click a disk service?
Right now you cannot do that. The status-report webpage only shows one graph, and you cannot configure which one. Sorry ...
- How do I add the disk1 graph so that it is displayed in the trends section?
LARRDS is used to figure out how a status report is parsed to extract the RRD data; GRAPHS is used to decide which graphs show up on the "trends" page. So you'll want to add it to the GRAPHS setting.

I use Hobbit as a hobby. I used to be IT-technical manager for a company (Duni manufacturer of tissue, napkins, paperplates...) with 4000 employees worldwide. We once had a consultant from HP to monitor our SAP-system. He installed BB. After coming back to work after illness (burnt out) I continued to install and update BB. Now they are moving the office and moving the production abroad. I don't want to move, so I loose my job. But we had some obsolete HP-Ux servers, so I brought home 2.
So now I have small network at home with 1 PC, 1 Laptop, 2 HP-UX servers and 1 linuxserver that I'm installing. And this I'm monitoring ;)

As you would gather from my previous offline email to you, we're using hobbit and BB. I currently work outside the main IT department, but we have several AIX, FreeBSD and Windows servers along with some routers to monitor. The big iron side within IT has been using BB for several years for the various ibm/hp servers, but I'm not really sure what the windows guys are doing.
(our windows monitoring only consists of connection and http)
We've tried to introduce them [ms/novell guys] to various oss aspects such as BB and TWiki, but there doesn't seem to be any adoption.. I know they have other monitoring tools, but I think it makes them feel better to pay for them.

That sounds like quite an endorsement. I'm flattered that Hobbit is so useful that even the PHB's can see it. I know I am proud of my "baby", but it's a nice feeling to hear it from someone else.

If such a page can be useful, I'll be happy to collect names and references on a webpage as part of the Hobbit project. If you would like to be listed, send me the name of the company and a brief description of what you are doing with Hobbit, and I'll setup such a page.
As far as my own use is concerned, bbgen and hence Hobbit were born from the monitoring needs I have in my work for the CSC Managed Web Services division here in Copenhagen. We host large installations of network-centric applications - not just web, but any kind of software that is delivered via Internet or even Intranet. Since I started installing BB back in late 2001, the rumour has spread throughout the organisation, and the Hobbit/BB software is now an essential monitoring tool for the Copenhagen datacenter of CSC (which happens to be the largest CSC site in Northern Europe).
Among the larger installations monitored with Hobbit where I work you'll find all of the danish Internal Revenue Service systems (lots of web applications, e.g. for filing your official tax forms), a large nordic insurance company Tryg-Vesta, and the UK Postoffice - Royal Mail Group - which is currently moving into CSC.
