The "mem_swpd" DS name should be defined in the RRD file. Can you check with:

rrdtool info /usr/local/xymon/data/rrd/ext-dns1.example.com/vmstat.rrd | grep type

and see if it's listed? You should have 17 entries for a RHEL6 server. You might like to compare the output between servers that show failed trends graphs and those that show functioning ones.

With regards to the CPU trends graphs, I don't actually know what's standard for this, because I've added a whole heap. I wouldn't think adding mem_swpd to xymonserver.cfg or (hobbit)graph.cfg would be required to get a CPU graph to work because mem_swpd has nothing to do with CPU. If the graph shows and is not a broken image, then it's already listed in (hobbit)graph.cfg. If the graph shows on the trends page, then it's already in xymonserver.cfg in GRAPHS. I have "vmstat" listed in TEST2RRD, but if you're already getting an RRD file you have that set correctly.

By "blank" graph, you mean no lines, and NaN for the min/max/avg numbers under the graph?

Exactly what graph is broken? Can you click on the blank graph and look at the URL to see what service name it's using? It'll be something like " http://xymon.example.com/xymon-cgi/showgraph.sh?ex-dns1.example.com&service=......" You want to see what's after "service=" in the URL.

That "service" string is matched against RRD filenames as well as entries in graphs.cfg.

rrd-data.log has errors of the form /rrd-data.log:2015-07-18 14:08:42.443123 RRD error updating /usr/local/xymon/data/rrd/ ext-dns1.example.com/vmstat.rrd from 10.100.5.42: unknown DS name 'mem_swpd'

So,why do only a few of my servers have this error? What do I need to do to make the CPU trends graphs work? Do I add mem_swpd in xymonservers.cfg and hobbitgraph.cfg and graphs.cfg, and can I do that without breaking the other hundreds of servers?

Does anyone have the correct invocation for this? Thank you! (I am also assuming I'll have to blow away the old rrd file to get this to work...?)
