Obviously, it should be fairly easy to implement as a customization by creating e.g. a perl script to process the email, and using that as the email program. The perl (or your favorite language) script could generate MIME email with HTML and plain text parts. The HTML part would be a <pre> environment.

HTML email may be a good fit, since the same text is used for onscreen alerts (which are in HTML) and email alerts.
