Try doing the whole thing from tar -- see if that helps...
$ Tar xfzv hobbit-snapshot.tar.gz
Just downloaded it from Henrik's site and it all went no problem...
How are you downloading it? Commandline ftp? Make sure you are in binary mode when you download the file ("bin" within ftp)

Try downloading again (and flush your browser cache). Downloading the file works fine here.

I'm downloading with http. "It has always worked before". I hate to admit, but I don't know how to connect to hswn with ftp. Of course I know how to run ftp, but not here.

I don't do ftp on my site, so it would be very difficult to get it via ftp :-)
