Xymon 4.3.10 released - bugfixes and inode checks
Hi,
looking for a fresh beginning of the week ? Or perhaps an easy job to get going after the summer holidays ?
Then upgrading to Xymon version 4.3.10 is just the thing for You. It is of course the best Xymon version ever released, and is just what you need to keep your systems happy. Grab it from http://sourceforge.net/projects/xymon/files/Xymon/4.3.10/
The "killer feature" of this release is the addition (finally!) of inode-checking on all major platforms: Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, OSX, Solaris, HP/UX and AIX.
The build scripts have been vetted thoroughly, and Xymon 4.3.10 will build without any problems on Debian Linux, RHEL Linux, Ubuntu Linux, Fedora Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and Solaris. If you run into problems, have a look at the new, detailed instructions on building Xymon on various platforms, available at http://www.xymon.com/xymon/help/install.html#commonsystems - it will tell you everything you need to know about what pre-requisites are required, and what special options you may need to configure.
And to prove it, you can now download pre-built versions of Xymon for most platforms directly from Sourceforge. There is also a demo-installation VM image available, if you'd like to try it out first.
(One note about the RPM-packages: They don't handle all issues automatically; you can use them, but some manual setup will probably be needed to fix SELinux issues and such. More advanced RPM-packages are available at http://terabithia.org/rpms/xymon/ although 4.3.10 isn't there yet).
Regards, Henrik

Awesome, Henrik! The timing is interesting too -- last week, my test Xymon server ran out of inodes (I had disabled the MTA and 482k e-mails had stacked up in the clientmqueue) and I said to myself "why am I not checking inodes?"

I just compiled xymon 4.3.10 Solaris 10 x86 32bit without any issues :D
But, there is an issue with make install, permissions/owners are wrong all over the place. Xymonping is not suid, most files are 700 or 600 (my root umask is 0077) /usr/local/xymon is 700 and owned by root, so nothing will work. I manually set most of it to something that works, but setting all to 755 might not be the best solution, even if that should work.
I looked at xymon-4.3.10-solaris10x86-CSW.tar for comparison and it looks like that one needs some tweaking as well in terms of owners. But as it is just a tar file you need a permission/owner script to change them I guess.

Will 4.3.10 client play completely nice with a 4.3.7 server?
I am going to need to do some change control process to get the server updated, but can start doing clients if they'll work without problems.
Hi,
Xymon 4.3.10 is now also available on Mac OSX through the macports: http://www.macports.org/ports.php?by=name&substr=xymon
I took this opportunity to rename the packages names. They're now "xymon-client" and "xymon-server" to avoid any confusion.
Thanks a lot Henrik for this great release where inode check and disk check is working good also on OSX. Another good news is the rrd graph generation is now very fast (no clue why...).
Enjoy!
Hi
I wanted to upgrade the client on a Debian (Squeeze) machine, to get inode monitoring. I uninstalled the official xymon-client package, and installed the deb package from sourceforge. It seems like there is some problem with config files, or the parsing of them. I set the xymon servers setting during the packages installation, and this was correctly set in /etc/default/xymon-client, but when I started the client using the "/debian/xymon-client.init" from the source tarball (shouldn't this init script be included in the deb?), the client just tries to connect to itself. After manually setting the XYMSRV variable to 0.0.0.0 and the XYMSERVRS variable to the correct servers, in /etc/xymon/xymonclient.cfg, the client is able to report to the servers. Shouldn't it be enough to just set the servers during install (or in /etc/default/xymon-client), or am I doing something wrong? Another thing that I was curious about is how the files in /var/run/xymon are generated, and what their purpose is.
/Johan

This will not respond to you're actual problem, but if you're only interested in inode monitoring, you can make an external script. I made a simple client bash* script to do it (see attachment).
- column and sed are only used to make the output eye-candy
