Xymon 4.3.0-beta3 on iPad - tester needed
Hi,
I've had one report that the new Xymon menu (the one using CSS) does not work on an iPad. The same user reported that it *does* work in Apple's Safari browser.
So I'm curious if one of you have an ipad and could verify this for me ? The http://www.xymon.com/ website uses the new CSS menu, so just point your iPad browser there and let me know if the menus are working or not.
On a slightly related note, has anyone had problems installing Safari for Windows ? My installation hangs half-way through the installation while registering DLL's - so much that only a reboot can clean it up.
Regards, Henrik

It also doesn't work properly on the iPhone. This is because there's no concept of "hover".

The menus do come up on Android, but it takes a single click.

What's so awful about clicking to invoke a menu anyway? It's a well-known interface and personally, I find it irritating to have some of the page's content obscured just because I moved the mouse to the “wrong” place.
FYI, you can simulate some of the iPad browsing experience with Safari. In the Advanced section of the preferences, enable the Develop menu. On that menu, you can change the user-agent. Although it wouldn't help simulate the inability to hover, which is what was needed in this case.

I took that to be a description of behavior, not a complaint. I think this is just the way touch phones have to work unless there's a key modifier for mouseover or something. I understand this was a concern for Flash to.
It works with a click on HP/Palm webOS too.

I will take a look at it this evening when I get home. Did not bring my iPad with me to work today.

Tried to use the menus on the iPad. No go. Changed the settings power the iPad on and off after changing the settings. Still no go. Even with the debug console turned on. No error messages were displayed to tell you why they were not working. It was if they were just a part of the background.
I have Safari loaded on my PC. It has no problems with the menus.
So the Safari on the iPad is not a full featured version. 8-(

Thanks, this matches the other report I had. Some google'ing indicates that the problem is with the CSS "hover" attribute, which kind of makes sense since the iPad (and similar devices) do not have a mouse that can "hover" above anything. There are some hints for work- arounds, but I haven't had the chance to try implementing any.
CSS and/or iPad savvy users are very welcome to see if they can find a solution :-) Even if it means coming up with a different stylesheet for the iPad.
Regards, Henrik
I tried it out on my wife's Nook Color. The menus pop up when you touch them. So it should be very useful.
The Nook is Android based as well.

That is true, but Palm devices to allow for a click. I think Android handles this as well. Seems like a large oversight to not allow for hover somehow.
