Compilation would be the bigger issue. Since RPi uses ARM (I have one as well). You can attach and use external storage via USB...or limit yourself to the 32 GB max SD card you can install on.

Probably. I have one, but haven't done much with it yet.
You'd need to compile Xymon (and it's dependencies) on the machine.
Disk space for rrd and history would be an issue.
