Also, those of you who have used The Shire, any feedback (both positive and negative) would be appreciated.
Well, since I have a history with www.deadcat.net I would suggest something like that would be perfect :) Of course, there are a number of improvements to that system that could/should be made (in hindsight) as well. However, the basic concept of the site works quite well, with the original contributor retaining permission to edit/change their files and data, and anybody is able to upload. The main downside turned out to be that is was too difficult for someone who has improved a script to upload their version on top of the existing version. I haven't thought a lot about how to solve this, but I imagine some options are:
- Upload a patch to a file which is displayed together with the file (ie, it is associated with the original file) but is maintained as a stand-alone file
- Ability to communicate with the original contributor and hope they will incorporate the changes.
- Ability to "adopt" a file if the original contributor agrees or does not respond.
Probably some other options as well, and some people may not see all that as a bad thing at all.
Of course, building the system that runs the site was somewhat time-consuming, and I'm sure the folks at Quest will not allow us to re-use it (sorry).
Regards, Adam
