Since you are using "dialup", no tests will go purple, they will instead go clear (white) if no report is received. That is by design (see man hosts.cfg). If you want it to generate the alert for other tests while ignoring the "ping" connection test status, then perhaps you need to use the "?conn" tag. This will make it perform the ping test, but report a clear status if it does not answer. Other tests should still report their normal status.
