You might also want to make sure you can get to the Hobbit server from the client:
client $ telnet <hobbit-server> 1984
Should result in a "connected" message.

I don't know about the client in the package you reference, but I built the 4.2 hobbit server on an HP-UX 11.11 machine and have copied the client portion of the build to several HPUX servers. I currently have it running on HPU-UX on 11.11, 11.23 and 11.31 clients without issues. I suspect you either need to make sure the BBDISPLAY variable is set properly in the client install or you need to check for a "ghost client" and make sure the bb-hosts file is configured properly to display the data from the client on our hobbit web page.
