Thank you J.C. and Fran for responding. I use the default plain format, and it does look like Outlook is what strips the line breaks. I have changed the Outlook config as per KB287816 and will wait for the next alert to validate.

Don't use stupid Outlook. Or tame it to NOT trim linebreaks when it shouldn't! :-)
