If it's the alerts rather than the actual colour that is the issue, another option is in alerts.cfg to add an IGNORE rule - this still preserves the colour status being reported by the test (rather than making it blue for the duration of the DOWNTIME), but just stops the alerts. With judicious use of regular expressions this can be very flexible.
