I've been using BB/Hobbit with RRDtool for, I guess at least 5 years, maybe more. I've installed it successfully on maybe 10 servers. Things certainly got easier with Hobbit compared to BB!
I've just installed Hobbit on a Centos 5.2 box and for the life of me I can't work out why my RRDs aren't getting updated (they are always created during first run, but never updated). I've grepped every log, history file, etc I can find and can find no hints. Can someone suggest where to look for errors or problems to do with *updating* the RRDs?
Everything is stock, I haven't touched the bb-hosts file, indeed anything really...

Extra info... The RRDs are created when hobbit is first run

So if you tail rrd-data.log and rrd-status.log you don't see any messages that indicate any failure in the rrd process?
Does the Hobbit web display show any red alerts indicating that a rrd process crashed?
Which release of Hobbit are you running?

Hi Rich,
Thank you for your quick response.
I am using hobbit-4.2.0.
I have no red alerts.
Green: bbd,bbgen,bbtest,conn,cpu,disk,hobbitd,http,info,memory,msgs*,trends Grey: files,ports,procs
Note I did have to make /var/log/messages 660 and root.hobbit for it to be read.
I get nothing in the logs. After deleting all logs, and stopping and starting hobbit, and waiting 20 minutes, I get this:

No, I haven't patched at all. I don't see any patches at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=128058.
Perhaps worth mentioning - the hist directory appears to have events generated at first run, but never thereafter (other than the "allevents" file).

FWIW, I am using RRDTool 1.3.4.
After patching, now during hobbit ./configure I get this (which doesn't appear to present a problem at the time as it continues apparently ok):
Checking for RRDtool ... test-rrd.c: In function âmainâ: test-rrd.c:30: error: too few arguments to function ârrd_graphâ make: *** [test-compile] Error 1 Not RRDtool 1.0.x, checking for 1.2.x Found RRDtool include files in /usr/local/rrdtool-1.3.4/include Found RRDtool libraries in /usr/local/rrdtool-1.3.4/lib Linking RRD with PNG library: -L/usr/lib -lpng
After starting hobbit, now I get "bbdisplay terminated by signal 6" in the hobbitlaunch.log, and my hobbit HTML page doesn't work anymore (Going to the hobbit index webpage I get:

).
Hobbitlaunch contains:

Additionally, the RRD files are, as before, created but never updated.

Catch the WAVV! http://www.wavv.org WAVV 2009 - Orlando, FL - May 15-19, 2009
I have install RRDTool 1.2.28 now so I have:
[root at zzz hobbit-4.2.0]# ll /usr/local/ | grep rrd drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Nov 6 05:41 rrdtool-1.2.28 drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Nov 5 04:44 rrdtool-1.3.4
I seem to be having trouble getting hobbit to use 1.2.28. At first I just removed the 1.3.4 directory, hobbit configure reported that it detected and was using rrdtool 1.2, but when it ran the logs filled with errors about not finding 1.3.4 files.
I then restored 1.3.4 and tried using:
./configure --server --rrdinclude=/usr/local/rrdtool-1.2.28/include --rrdlib=/usr/local/rrdtool-1.2.28
However ./configure appears to ignore the extra commands and says it will use 1.3.4 files:
"Checking for RRDtool ... test-rrd.c: In function âmainâ: test-rrd.c:30: error: too few arguments to function ârrd_graphâ make: *** [test-compile] Error 1 Not RRDtool 1.0.x, checking for 1.2.x Found RRDtool include files in /usr/local/rrdtool-1.3.4/include Found RRDtool libraries in /usr/local/rrdtool-1.3.4/lib Linking RRD with PNG library: -L/usr/lib -lpng "
Can anyone advise how to properly remove RRDtool 1.3.4 or get hobbit to configure using 1.2.28?
TIA!
Jeremy.

You may need to remove your .rrd. files that 1.3.4 generated and start from scratch.

Hi Larry,
I always "rm -fr /usr/local/hobbit" and "rm -fr /var/log/hobbit/*" before recompiling to ensure everything is totally clean.
Nonetheless, I get "hobbitd_rrd: error while loading shared libraries: librrd.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory 2008-11-06 06:09:22 Worker process died with exit code 32512, terminating" in my logs now as it appears to still be looking for the 1.3.4 rrdtool for some reason (there must be something still on the system that tells it to look for librrd.so.4)?
This is despite this showing up during configure (having removed the 1.3.4 rrdtool directory entirely before running configure):
"Checking for RRDtool ... test-rrd.c: In function âmainâ: test-rrd.c:30: error: too few arguments to function ârrd_graphâ make: *** [test-compile] Error 1 Not RRDtool 1.0.x, checking for 1.2.x Found RRDtool include files in /usr/local/rrdtool-1.2.28/include Found RRDtool libraries in /usr/local/rrdtool-1.2.28/lib Linking RRD with PNG library: -L/usr/lib -lpng "
My apologies for getting sidetracked here, but perhaps this will be useful to archive for other people who need to downgrade their RRDtool (if this is indeed the problem anyway!).
Jeremy.

The Hobbit build seems to be remembering about the newer release. Before you configure again run 'make distclean'.

Rich you are quite the legend!
Indeed - I needed to "make distclean" before recompiling hobbit.
This has fixed the problem entirely.
So the end result of this thread, is that hobbit 4.2.1 is not compatible with RRDTool V1.3.8 (likely 1.3.x).
Thank you to everyone who has helped and good luck in making hobbit compatible with RRDTool 1.3 in the future. In the meantime, perhaps an fatal warning if configure detects rrdtool 1.3.x would suffice.
Warmly,
Jeremy

Hi,
the compilation stuff set aside, I had noticed my rrds didn't update too. The truth was that they *did* update, but the mtime of the files doesn't change, though.
Later librrd versions apparently do some funky stuff with mmap() that doesn't update the timestamps. The contents are still updated.

The missing timestamp update is a Linux kernel 2.6.x feature/bug.

I never had such a problem on any installation. Ones a rrd file is created, it is also updated.
Can you check if you have the needed processes running ?

TJ, I hope You did this with the best of intentions. But I'm really offended that You did it without at least telling me about it first. My personal e-mail address is well known, and dropping me a mail first would have been the polite thing to do. If You'd done that, such a release could have been done quickly with my "official" blessing.
Instead, You've made me angry and created a mess - there's now one more place where some random version of Hobbit can be found. And on top of it all You've given it the look of an official patch by putting a "4.2.1" label on it.
All I'm asking for is that all of you *think* about what you do. If you're frustrated about the next release not arriving, do something to move it forward - i.e. grab the current source-trunk from the Subversion archive, use it and send bug reports. Or patches. Or write docs.

Henrik,
Oh the joys of releasing your well maintained product to the masses :) The vigilante actions remind me of some of the internal antics at the company I work for. True thinkers are often overshadowed by the impatient masses. I feel your pain....

Would it not be sensible to remove it? I don't know if that can be done or not (don't see why not though), that way we don't have to worry about an odd version floating around. Maybe put a README in its place stating that the patch was released incorrectly, or some such?

I have no idea what freenode.net is or does, but if it's an IRC server then it's not going to work for a large number of us who use and maintain Hobbit in a work environment. I haven't worked for many companies in my time but I can guarantee that none of them allowed/allow IRC within their network, no matter how it is tunnelled.

Sheesh, talk about negative. If you can't use it thats tough, don't nay-say others that can. I for one am in favour of this.
I was being realistic rather than negative. If only 5% of Hobbit admins Are able to use this service then is it going to be that useful?

First off please note most IRC channels don't get questions answered within a few hours. While it does happen from time to time it should not be expected.
IRC is a weird thing to block intentionally. SSH tunneling easily avoids this, though.

I'd also appreciate if a hobbit channel was setup on freenode. There are many times when I've wished for it.
And, there are many other user communities which have found having channels invaluable, including VMware admins (208 active users atm) and Cisco NetEngs (~300 active users).
Certainly, monitoring isn't any less important - although, it's a testament to hobbit's reliability as it is that a mailing list has been sufficient to get by to date.

Matt

Don't know what it is either but it is block via our corparate
filtering. Most interactive things like chat and email services like
yahoo gmail are block. Though they missed a few obscure thing.

Same here.
I try to apply for a xymon channel via following url.
http://freenode.net/group_contact_form.shtml
I filled in all the need fields and hit submit. But all of this look like just a registration of group contact. The actual creation of #xymon channel is not clear to me. I am using ChatZilla and type in #xymon, and looks like I am in the channel by myself. can other people with irc client try to join irc://freenode/xymon ?
Or better yet, can some body with experience of setting up irc channel step forward to do the work ?
