Hi Guys,
I am testing the actual (4.2.0) hobbit client together with a BigBrother professional monitoring server. With windows clients and bbwin 0.9 no issue at all. Only the Linux client does not really want to work. Compilation and all that stuff works great, but when it comes to send the gathered data to the monitoring server, I receive the following errors:
On the client in /var/log/hobbit/hobbitclient.log:
2007-02-23 15:20:42 Write error while sending message to bbd at x.x.x.x:1984
2007-02-23 15:20:42 Whoops ! bb failed to send message - write error
On the Server in BBOUT:
Fri Feb 23 15:12:16 2007 bbd Connection terminated from y.y.y.y (partial message)
Does anybody know what the issue is ? I´ve already searcher through the archives, but without success :-(
Thanks in advance,
Ralph

Won't work. The Hobbit client architecture is not compatible with a BB server.

Ok,
Thanks for the answers. But why is bbwin compatible BigBrother ? I always thought this is just a "windows" compilation of the hobbit-client ? Is there another client you guys know, which is at no cost and compatible with BigBrother ?

For compatibility, the hobbit client sends 1 data stream with all information in it. It's the server that will use this data stream and generate the data for the columns. It's a dump client, the server will process all data. For BigBrother, the server expects 1 update per column. Also, it's the client who determines what's green-yellow-red. So, the BigBrother server is dump, it only displays what the client sends. Hobbit can also receive data like the BigBrother server. So, a hobbit client can only send info to a hobbit server. A BigBrother client can send data to a hobbit and a BigBrother server.
Is there another client you guys know, which is at no cost and compatible with BigBrother ? A Linux client? I think there is a perl version of the bb command.
Stef
I think the Big Sister client is compatible with the BB server, as well. IIRC correctly, Big Sister is written in Perl and is available on SourceForge.
Thanks, Larry Barber

BBWin has been designed for compatibility with a Big Brother server. The Hobbit server is compatible with BB *clients*, but not the other way around. The Hobbit and BB designs are just fundamentally different, starting with the fact that Hobbit keeps all configuration files on the server, whereas BB has configuration files distributed to each and every client.
Is there another client you guys know, which is at no cost and compatible with BigBrother ?
Have you tried asking on the BB mailing list ?
