Never got an answer on this. I'm hoping someone might know the story.

Hi all,
I've not used the name "temperature" for this test because it is obnoxiously long, instead substituting "temp" for the test name. I've since found that Xymon will automatically graph my temperature tests if I use the name "temperature" instead of temp. But, I still have no desire to do that. Would changing it to "temp" require me to edit the source code and recompile, or is this in config files? I can't find anything on the web that necessarily addresses this.
Thanks for the pointers!

Pardon me -- this message was apparently in my outgoing mail and not delivered until now. I did get a bit of information from some others.
I still do not know how this one test functions as a built-in process, however, so I guess it is true that that part was not answered. Is the temperature test hard-coded in the source code for graphing?

Look at hobbitgraph.cfg: there is a section called temperature, but none called temp.

Yeah, that I changed to [temp]. I'm assuming what I should be looking for are temp*.rrd files. If they are not there, is the client or the server not generating them? Where might I look to see why that is not happening?

Where might I look to see why that is not happening? If the test is called temp, and you've added it in hobbitserver.cfg in TEST2RRD and optionally GRAPHS, and you've defined SPLITNCV_temp, you should find files called ^temp\.(.+)\.rrd$ (parameter of FNPATTERN). Did you read about custom graphs in Xymon, such as http://pto.linuxbog.dk/hobbit/help/howtograph.html ?

I have, thanks. I wanted to investigate the opportunity to use a built-in test first, but I can see that there are some problems with that idea regardless. Also, though, doing things that way helped me to understand the graphing process a lot better.
One thing that confused me the first time I set out to do this is that it appears to rely heavily on the output format of the status test. eg. It expects values of VALUE1: amount, VALUE2: amount... not something a whole lot more complicated. This makes using NCV to add graphing to an external script not a very simple idea, if I'm understanding that correctly.
Do you know if that is a proper take on it, or should I read deeper?

OK, I got further with this. As it turns out, this IS hard coded in the source code. First place is xymon-4.2.3/hobbitd/do_rrd.c as extracted from the source:
diff do_rrd.c.orig do_rrd.c
389c389 < else if (strcmp(id, "temperature") == 0) res = do_temperature_rrd(hostname, testname, msg, tstamp);
else if (strcmp(id, "temp") == 0) res =
do_temperature_rrd(hostname, testname, msg, tstamp);
...but there's also an included file, ./rrd/do_temperature.c:
diff do_temperature.c.orig do_temperature.c
16c16 < "DS:temperature:GAUGE:600:1:U",
"DS:temp:GAUGE:600:1:U",
84c84 < savech = *(p+1); *(p+1) = '\0'; setupfn("temperature.%s.rrd", bol); *(p+1) = savech;
savech = *(p+1); *(p+1) = '\0';
setupfn("temp.%s.rrd", bol); *(p+1) = savech;
...I don't have graphs yet, but I think it might be the averages taking awhile. I guess we'll see. I do have RRD files now; anyone have any idea what to do if there are ultimately no graphs even with RRD files?

Are your sure you want to go down this path, simply to satisfy your sense of aesthetics? You will effectively be running a subtly, but significantly, non-standard build, which could lead to tears in the future, either for yourself, or those that come after you. If you, in a year or two, forget this change, and do an upgrade to the latest version, ALL your temperature stuff will break. Likewise, I predict a world of pain for your successor, should you ever leave this position, and they ask for help on the list, or try and upgrade.
From their perception, the Xymon upgrade will have broken the test, and Xymon will be seen as a peice of rubbish, and because the change that caused all the pain will be long forgotten, there will be no constructive help available on the list.
At the end of the day, this is the joy of open source. You have the code, and can modify it to your heart's content. It is your installation, and your right to do with it as you please. That being said, please think carefully before you do this. In the long run, it might not be such a good idea.
Regards Vernon
