I had already tried the same thing but i don't succeed in getting hobbit to show the alternate templates for the current graphs. Even when i add the --templates=/wherever/you/want directive to this line in hobbitcgi.cnf ( i know this would change the main site also, it's just a test )# hobbitsvc.cgi options for a normal (current) status displayCGI_SVC_OPTS="--env=/usr/lib/hobbit/server/etc/hobbitserver.cfg --no-svcid --history=top"I also tried adding another variable ($ALT_OPTS) that i created myself in the .sh script that generates the page and then adding it to the bb-hostsvc.sh like this: . /usr/local/hobbit/server/etc/hobbitcgi.cfg exec /usr/local/hobbit/server/bin/hobbitsvc.cgi $CGI_SVC_OPTS $ALT_OPTSWhich basically also does nothing...Can anyone shed some light on this??? It seems that the actual cgi scripts that run when you click on an item use the default header sets, rather than the ones specified by your --templates or --pageset settings with bbgen. The first page on the pageset does use the custom_header and custom_footer files, but if you click on an item like "cpu", it runs a cgi script which generates a new page using the default templates instead of your custom ones. For example, most of the items call "bb-hostsvc.sh". which is just a wrapper that takes arguments and runs . /usr/local/hobbit/server/etc/hobbitcgi.cfg exec /usr/local/hobbit/server/bin/hobbitsvc.cgi $CGI_SVC_OPTS Now, optimally you should be able to put a custom $CGI_SVC_OPTS definition in whatever script generates your alternate pages, such that CGI_SVC_OPTS=--templates=/whatever/directory/with/your/new/templatefiles Unfortunately, even this doesn't seem to work. The key is to get your custom sub-pages to use custom templates for the graph pages and such that are dynamically generated by the CGI files. ntpdate question

Hi, before updating our hobbit server to version 4.2.0, I tested the ntp configuration with the bb-ntp-1_4.sh script on the client nodes. When I now configure the server to use the ntp network test instead, I realize that this doesn't work with most of our RedHat clients. I get the response ntpdate -u -q -p 2 a.b.c.d server a.b.c.d, stratum 0, offset 0.000000, delay 0.00000 29 Aug 10:53:26 ntpdate[3509]: no server suitable for synchronization found The network test works with all AIX clients and with older RedHat clients. The manual page of ntpdate on a RedHat machine says, that "the ntpdate program is to be retired from this distribution". Is there another way of testing the ntp synchronisation from the server side or do I still have to use the bb-ntp.sh script? Best wishes, Dirk Kastens

More Granular data than 300 second samples, duh!

One of the most common requests to the trending of data is "How do I make the charts graph data samples which are smaller than 300 seconds?" And the answer has been, you have the source, have fun. The original design decision that Henrik inherited was larrd should only be for capacity planning and NOT real-time performance analysis. Do one thing and do it well. I had a thought the other day, and I think we could possibly get the "best of both worlds." Instead of $ vmstat 300 2 (resulting in one 300 second sample) why not $ vmstat 5 61 (resulting in sixty 5 second samples) The data would still only be transported every five minutes, but contain more granular samples. This could not be done for all metrics, but many. This would also require the RRAs of the all the RRDs be re-made (export, re-create, import). But I've that's been on my mind anyway cause the original RRA structure was based on screen sizes for 800x600, instead of business requirements. Henrik, do you follow my thinking? It's kinda hard for me to believe it's taken me over five years to think of this! My biggest concern is not the technical details of the collectors and RRD/RRA restructuring, but inflicting resource usage on servers measuring themselves. $ vmstat 1 301 would definitely be a bad idea. I have also some general questions about bbwin : Actually, svcs only works as a local agent because there is no option for it in hobbit-clients.cfg, it is very specific to Windows world. What do you prefer ? - we keep svcs agent with local configuration. BBWin can handle centralized mode with agents which will run with local configuration - we create a new option for the hobbit-clients.cfg which will be only used for Windows client - May be you have other good ideas about that problem. At this time, it is only about svcs agent but for advanced features in the future, we will have other choices to make. With the centralized mode, you will see that you get graphs for each of your networks connections. However, for Windows, the names are too long compared to the unix name (eth0, eri0..). So, at this time, I use the mac address of the network card for the graph name. Would you prefer to use the name by making a very short name ? the ip address ? or is the mac address fine ? There is a new agent 'who' used to report current connected users on the windows servers. There is no alert for it at this time. Which relevant type of alerts could be useful ? there is no alert options on Unix side. I was thinking of a rule like PROC but called USER with a minimum logged number and a maximum logged number for a username. For 2008, I will do my best to create more releases. 2007 was not a good year :-) The first goal will be to finalize the centralized mode with all the unix options. I now use the sourceforge subversion repository so you will always get the lastest sources of BBWin. As usual, let me know if you get troubles with this new version. Highlights of the 4.3.0 version

Henrik, The new features sound good! But are they now documented? I checked the snapshot and none of man pages or the Changes page seem to have been updated since the 4.2.0 release. It makes it quite difficult to test and use the new features (which presumably is a requirement before releasing the new version)! ;-) Or am I missing something less obvious than using the source (TM)? I think it would be useful if the Changes page (http://www.hswn.dk/beta/snapshot/Changes) was kept more or less up-to-date for the snapshot releases. Knowing what has changed in hobbit-server betas seems pretty difficult without downloading frequent snapshots and doing diffs. Is there any chance of the source being put into a public subversion / CVS repository or something? I see there is already a public CVS repository for hobbit on SourceForge, but it only includes the hobbit-client code A public repository may encourage more contributed patches. I also see that last year you mentioned that you are "using RCS which is a predecessor to CVS". I don't know if this is still the case, but if so, it appears pretty simple to migrate to CVS using rcs2cvs as documented here: http://www.linuxdocs.org/HOWTOs/CVS-RCS-HOWTO-3.html Or as the OP did in http://www.nabble.com/RCS-to-svn-t792119.html - he migrated RCS to SVN via CVS. [hobbit] http timeout and content checking

I'm having a little problem converting some Sitescope web page checks into Hobbit content checks. In particular, I have several URLs of the form: https://some.machine.name:9212/monitoring/MonitorControlServlet?monitorName… (names changed to protect the innocent) The problem is, I can go to that URL manually, and it will show up fine...after about 20 seconds or so. The URL is slow to respond, because it is running a back-end check, and that check simply takes a while to complete. The result is that Hobbit is coming back saying that the website failed to respond after 10.x seconds, even though it would be fine if I waited another 10 seconds or so. I would like to be able to increase the timeout, but only for URLs similar to above that are expected to take a while to respond. I don't want to increase this timeout across the board, since only a subset of all of the URL monitoring I am doing take so long to respond. Is there any way to do this? ----- Also on a related, though different note, are a few other tests that I can't get the "content" column to show up. These URLs are of the form: https://username:password at some.machine.name:9212/monitoring/MonitorControlServlet?monitorName=com.company.common.util.monitoring.URLMonitor&url=https://some.machine.name:9212/LBListener/MessageReceiver&fullDisplay=true&isPost=true&ABCAction=AccountInfoRequest&ABCService=MemberManagement&payload=<request:AccountInfoRQ xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:request=" com.company.accountrequest"><AccountInfo AccountCardNumber="4264292967999999" PortfolioID="177" SecurityInfo="true"/></request:AccountInfoRQ> (names changed to protect the innocent) The http check is working fine, but it seems like hobbit is ignoring the fact that I have it set up as a content check. The bb-hosts line for this test looks like: 1.2.3.4 test-name # DESC:"Test description" noconn nosslcert cont;<URL above>;Success badhttp:1:2:3 I also just noticed that for these tests, bbtest is complaining "content-check, but no content-data in <bb-hosts line above>". However, if I manually go to the URL in a browser, it does indeed return "content-data", and it returns in a timely fashion (about 2 or 3 seconds). Any ideas?

[BUG] hobbitd_alert fails to execute script on large message

Hi, I encounter a serious problem when using the following rule in hobbit-alerts.cfg : EXSERVICE=_site SCRIPT=/usr2/hobbitlocal/bin/send_to foobar FORMAT=text RECOVERED REPEAT=6m when BBALPHAMSG is large (ie a "procs" or "ports" on a very busy box), the log says : 2007-12-17 16:31:01 Could not launch paging script /usr2/hobbitlocal/bin/send_to: Argument list too long The problem is with execlp in do_alert.c. I could use a different format (sms) for columns such as ports/procs and other verbose ones, but it's not foolproof. (in the meantime, I'll do this anyway). Maybe a safer approach would be to add a SIZELIMIT=xxx in hobbit-alerts.cfg or automatically crop the BBALPHAMSG depending on the local OS prior to execlp(). How do I monitor a process that is running on Windows?

Hi, I have a process "inetinfo.exe" running on a Windows server. I would like to monitor it, but when I put it in hobbit-clients.cfg, it does not see it as a process. How can I monitor "inetinfo.exe" process? Thanks, Liora
