Our support staff likes having our monitoring system setup & organized by logical category/type. However, management is more interested in a view that is organized by business impact. For example: IT Top Level View- Hosted Services Corporate Connectivity Corporate Servers Corporate Desktops Remote Laptops Facility Connectivity Facility Desktops Management Top Level View- Email (Subpage containing all dependent hosts/services) HRMS (same as above) Sales CRM i.e. a listing for each "service" provided - possibly even maintained below subpages for each business unit Management wants availability and impact by the specific service and business unit impacted (10,000 foot view showing all dependencies), while IT is interested in the detail of the cogs/gears that make it all work. Do I just create a second listing for all of the hosts on a separate page structure? Would this generate twice as many network tests for the hosts that are listed duplicate times? Any suggestions? Thanks!

bb-services: regexes in expect string?

I have this defined in bb-services: [smtp-transaction] send "helo hobbit.domain.com\r\nmail from: <test at domain.com>\r\nrcpt to: <test at anotherdomain.com>\r\nquit\r\n" expect "220-mx01.domain.com ESMTP\r\n220 ESMTP READY\r\n250 mx01.domain.com\r\n250 sender <test at domain.com> ok\r\n" port 25 and a host that uses it in bb-hosts. This works great, except that it's tied to the host mx01.domain.com in the expect string. Is it possible to use regexes in the expect string, such as expect "220-mx0[0|1].domain.com"? [hobbit] xynagios for RHEL ?

Hi Martin, I just took a quick peek into the file and it is a perl script that says in the description: <xynagios> runs a Nagios check, and reports its output in a way compatible with the Xymon (Hobbit, BB) monitoring system. The Xymon test name is taken from the plugin output if it starts with test_name <OK|WARNING|CRITICAL|ERROR|UNKNOWN>. Otherwise, the basename of the plugin filename is used. A check prefix is removed for brevity. So it seems you can run Nagios tests in XYmon with this script. And since this is a perl script you might only need some additional modules that can be found in the Debian package libsysadm-install-perl and maybe there is a similar package for Red Hat too. Disk test, NFS and FTP queries

Hello List, I'm rather familiar with BigBrother but new to Xymon. My Xymon server 4.2.3 runs on CentOS and my monitored nodes are a mix of Solaris, Windows, Cisco, and NetApp hosts. Q1. Is there a way to avoid the Solaris 10 virtual filesystems (i.e./etc/dfs/sharetab) from being listed/graphed in the disk test? (possibly via conf setting on the Xymon client, rather than on the server) Also, the web page shows seven filesystems, whereas the RRD graphs show nine of them... (those 7 plus /devices and /var/run). How do I get rid of them? Q2. I manage to monitor NFS mounted filesystems (from a NetApp filer) via an external script from deadcat.net, but is there a way to get them show up in the disk test/column? This way I get to: a. save a column ;-) b. have all the filesystems shown under one roof c. have NFS filesystems automagically graphed Q3. Is there a functionality similar to the BB www/notes html files, and a template that matches the current xymon fonts/style? Or, where can I add custom info about my monitored nodes? I.e. serial numbers, helpdesk contacts, etc... Q4. I have had to enable ftp on one Solaris 10 box to allow it to just ftp itself (don't ask!), and therefore I configured /etc/hosts.allow as follows: [actarus]$ grep ftp /etc/hosts.allow in.ftpd: actarus [actarus]$ Now, on the bb-hosts on the Xymon server, if I put: 10.11.12.13 actarus # http://actarus/ ssh !telnet !ftp !smtp it gets RED, telling me that FTP is up and if I put 10.11.12.13 actarus # http://actarus/ ssh !telnet ftp !smtp# it gets YELLOW with the following message: Service ftp on actarus is not OK : Unexpected service response In fact, if I ftp actarus from the Xymon server cli, I get: $ ftp actarus Connected to actarus.boing.com. 421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection ftp> quit $ Is there a way around this? Clientupdate problems

Does anyone have clientupdate working reliably for a large number of machines? I noticed a problem with clientupdate failing on our 4.2.0 server and tracked it down that once a few clients seem to request the update the server stops sending the file. The clients however happily update the clientversion.cfg and thus never attempt to get the file again. After upgrading to 4.2.3, the problem is the same. Anyone else see this? I have read some of the back forum messages and it sounds line several others have run up against this same problem but there doesn't seem to be a solution. Butch

[hobbit] Troubleshooting Alerts -- Having Problems

Thanks Martin, Is there a way using the same method to cause the alert to activate. For example, I want a host to activate on disk% has reached 98%, and go ahead and send a test page to my cell phone so I can check the format. maint mode from command line

Hi, Is there a way to issue a command to put a list of servers into maint mode instead of having to select them from the GUI?
