Henrik and Fellow Xymoners, Just for you I have pushed off any real work for today just to get you all a first release of MAGMA the XYMon Web GUI Admin. MAGMA is an add-on web GUI for managing Host, Groups and Alarms on a XYmon 4.3 or newer system. You can find MAGMA at http://www.squidworks.net/magma/ There you will find the description, screen shots and features of MAGMA along with the link to download the source package. It requires MySQL and PHP5 and is very simple to install. All supporting information is included in the tarball. How does it work? --------------------------- It stores all alarm and host/group configs in the SQL database and rewrites the Host.cfg, Analysis.cfg and Alarms.cfg files causing the XYmon system to update its tests and pages based on the changes in these files. It will overwrite the files each time a host is added or edited making the process of updating automatic. To get the full benefit of MAGMA you should place all hosts in "central" mode, although this is not required, without it your management is somewhat restrictive (external test management only). Raspberry Pi Xymon Server

Bug in handling of Windows services

I believe there is a bug in the way Xymon handles Windows service data. I've always used BBWin agents and had the issue when a Service is in a stopped state that Xymon actually reports, Service is started/automatic - want started/automatic This is with the analysis.cfg line of SVC Service status=started startup=automatic I'm currently testing the WinPSClient and have found that I also get the same erroneous message with that. This suggests to me the Xymon is icorrectly handling the data from the client. I'm on version 4.3.4 of Xymon Server. I had a look through the release notes for all versions since 4.3.4 and couldn't find any mention of it so I suspect it is still an issue. local mode client

One of my co-workers has installed xymon 4.3.7, and wants to use local mode for configuration. The display server is not receiving anything from his machine if things run normally, but when run by hand, xymon can send data from his server (Solaris) to the display server. nginx as the web server

Hi All I am using nginx instead of apache with xymon. I set it up using the link http://timedoctor.org/2010/09/setting-up-xymonhobbit-with-nginx/ I am using nginx with xymon_4.3.12_amd64.deb from sourceforge. To make the cgi links work I needed to create symlinks as the link above suggested. /usr/lib/xymon/xymon-cgi -> /usr/lib/xymon/cgi-bin /usr/lib/xymon/xymon-seccgi -> /usr/lib/xymon/cgi-secure Is that how everyone using it with nginx? The Big Brother / Xymon summit

Hi, Sean McGuire - the inventor of Big Brother - and myself managed to get together at "Sparkys Roadside Barbecue" in Miami last month. We had a very nice evening discussing Big Brother, Xymon, the foibles of our various corporate overlords, and generally covering a wide range of topics. In other words, I had a great evening - and I think Sean did too. Thanks to the Xymon users who donated "beer money" for the event, although Sean insisted to save those for another occasion. Column order and accessibility of the 'info' column

We're finding the 'info' column to be very important to us, but are also finding it a little difficult to find in the web displays. Since the number and titles of the columns displayed for each group vary, it is impossible to know which green diamond is the 'info' column without consulting the group-header. Is is difficult in a couple of cases: + If there are many hosts in a group, it can be hard to do the row/column matching to click the correct 'info' button. + If we use the 'find host/jump' function, the found host is at the top of the page and we must scroll up to find the header. I can think of several ways to make this more usable: + Use a unique icon (or icon set) for 'info'. Is 'info' ever be anything but green? + Let me rename the 'info' column like we can the 'conn' column. If it were named ' info' it would always sort to the left. + Let me specify an alternative column sort order for my pageset. + Make the 'find/jump' option jump to the group rather than the host. Can anyone suggest another way (which is already possible) I can use to improve the accessibility of the 'info' column? -- Do things because you should, not just because you can. Possible BUG in how Xymon interprets data for monitoring "FILE" and "MSGS"

Hi everyone! We have a random issue with a Samba server where it core dumps each new smbd process as users log in. Generally the server functions 24/7/365, but once something (we don't know what yet) triggers this, each new smbd process spawned core dumps and no new logins are possible. Simple way to monitor with Xymon is by looking for the non-existance (NOEXIST) of one of these core files: /var/log/samba/cores/smbd/core The Xymon issue I am reporting here is that by default, the directories above this file were created with 600 root:root permissions, and as such, Xymon can not see/access this file even when it exists and will report GREEN for the 'files' test. Interesting thing is that if I remove the NOEXIST parameter from the analysis.cfg line for this file - meaning that this file needs to exist - and the file does exist, Xymon also reports it GREEN. Clicking on the files test and then the /var/log/samba/cores/smbd/core link on the test's page brings you to a white web page with the following: [file:/var/log/samba/cores/smbd/core] ERROR: Permission denied At the bare minimum, I would think that Xymon would report this test as yellow, not green because "something is wrong" that an admin monitoring, or configuring Xymon needs to address. For now, I have modified the permissions in the directory tree to allow for Xymon to access the dir that this file gets created in, but if for some reason, perhaps on syslog-ng startup or some other reason these permissions are reverted, Xymon will always think this test is GREEN, and no one will ever be notified when the file does appear. Of course, I can add additional tests for this host to monitor each directory's ownership and permissions down to the file, but that becomes more cumbersome and opens things up to more places where an admin can make mistakes. I have noticed a similar thing with regards to monitoring MSGS. By default (on Gentoo systems with syslog-ng, at least) /var/log/messages is created root:root 640, and as such, the Xymon user can not read this file to parse it. The MSGS test however shows GREEN. But on its page shows: --[snip]-- No entries in /var/log/messages Full log /var/log/messages Cannot open logfile /var/log/messages : Permission denied --[snip]-- I generally fix this by greating a group 'log', adding the xymon user to it and configuring syslog-ng to create the /var/log/messages file with root:log 640 perms.. But again, if my monitoring server is (default) set to monitor a log file and is told "permission denied" I would consider that to be at least a yellow status that an admin needs to investigate and address.
