This isn't a question but I am just submitting to the list that when using the linux 'mail' as most people do, it will sometimes send emails with blank body's and the actual content in a subject_line.dat file. This is due to carriage returns not being stripped from certain alert output (like HTTP or CPU status from Windows machines). The 'mail' command does not know how to deal with this and will not send properly. To get rid of this issue you need to create a custom alert script and pipe the output through translate to remove any carriage returns (because they are not native to *nix ascii text). An simple example would be (\015 represents a CR): echo -e "STATUS: RECOVERED\nDATE: `date`\nSYSTEM: $BBHOSTSVC\nDURATION: $DOWNSECS\nINFO: $BBH_DESCRIPTION\n\n--\n\n$BBALPHAMSG\n\n" | tr -d '\015' | /usr/bin/mail -s "RECOVERED: $BBHOSTSVC" $RCPT OR more simply echo "alert body whatever you want" | tr -d '\015' | /usr/bin/mail -s "subject of email" recipient_of_email The important part is the [ tr -d '\015' ] to delete all CR's in the message before it's piped to mail.

I tried both of the options you suggested and they do not work for me. I listed the contents of my configuration files in my previous post on this subject (listed again here). Both of these changes are in place but neither of them is having an effect. Does this work for you? I'm using 4.2. So after you drop it, it will be re-created the next time the client sends in an update. If you want to remove the "ports" column because it is clear (white), then use the "NOCOLUMNS:ports" setting in bb-hosts, or change hobbitserver.cfg so hobbitd_client is launched with the --no-clear-ports option. Hi, I'm having a problem with dropping a host's test. I perform the following command from the server (there are no output errors or errors in the error log)... bb 127.0.0.1 "drop opsappsl.lac-bac.gc.ca ports" Within a couple of minutes the ports column gets dropped and then a couple of minutes later the column reappears. So the drop command works ok but the settings do not stick. I've RTFM'd and searched the web for answers to no avail. I commented out every single entry in the client-local.cfg file. There were no logfetch.* files in the ~/client/tmp/ directory (I've never seen one of those). I also read the man page for the client-local.cfg file (and many other man pages). Those options had no apparent effect whatsoever even though files and msgs are both clear (ports was removed by hacking the client hobbitclient-linux.sh script). The log and file tests are controlled by the client-local.cfg file on the hobbit server and the logfetch.* files in ~/client/tmp/ on the client. I have no uncommented PORT entries on the client or the server. Looks like Milne has the right answer, at least for ports and procs. I'm still not sure how to get files and msgs to disappear. As I mentioned in the Milne reply none of the proposed solutions has worked for those two tests and only his solution has worked for the procs and ports tests. Thanks anyway. BTW the ports test must be performed from the client because the server cannot have any knowledge of internal interfaces such as local loopback...
