I've got a few instances of a.b.c.d www.server.com # http://www.server.com/ and the http column shows up just fine, including the time the test took and a nice graph. The question I was just asked is, is it possible to specify "max response time", so that if the time shown is greater than N seconds I get a red flag?? I don't see a way to set that in the man pages for either bb-hosts or hobbit-client.cfg. Thanks, Ralph Mitchell

Recently, I noticed it was consuming approx 8G worth of data per month (from all the remote clients reporting their data). This was costing quite a bit of money (we pay per MB), so I modified all the client to report using a different IP (and hence provider which has much cheaper rates). Anyway, the problem is that approximately since then, a number of client reports are not completely received. Sometimes some of the ps output is truncated, sometimes the ports sections is truncated, etc. This leads to false positive alerts (ie, procs goes red because some monitored procs are not running since they were after the truncated section). I've increased the timeout on the hobbitd (--timeout=60) but this doesn't seem to have helped. The only common factor between the clients which have this problem are: 1) Most of them are running bbproxy and passing status messages from a number of clients. 2) The rest of them are on very slow connections, or frequently very busy connections. Around the same time I actually 'fixed' bbproxy to on the remote sites, prior to this the clients were reporting directly to both hobbit servers. I've looked for an option to stop bbproxy from 'cacheing and combining' multiple clients into a single connection, but this doesn't seem to be possible. I don't seem to get any logs/alerts from hobbit when this happens. Can anyone suggest where I should look, what I can do to try and resolve this? (My main problem is that I've started ignoring the late night SMS notifications, and I'm sure I will end up missing something important because of that). Memory and CPU usage by a process

Anyone worked on collecting data and generating rrd and graph for a particular process? I am trying to collect it for all the java processes on one system, which is easy for solaris, and then generate rrd and create graph. With little perl scripts, as provided in rrdtool website, I can generate the rrds as well using the data but how do I tell hobbit server to do the graph? ping intervals

I have some servers that it is critical that I know they are down within at the most a minute to two minutes... hobbit polls every 5min if I remember right? How do I decrease the polling intervals so I can catch these connection problems quicker? Thanks in advance... no graphs from mpstat

I'm trying to setup mpstat to monitor systems with multiple cpu's, but the graphs are not created. Can someone help me with this ? The information is send from the client to the server and in the rrd data directory I have a file called mpstat.CPU2.rrd but there are no values in the last ds (see example) <ds> <name> CPU </name> <type> GAUGE </type> <minimal_heartbeat> 600 </minimal_heartbeat> <min> 0.0000000000e+00 </min> <max> 3.2000000000e+01 </max>  <last_ds> </last_ds> <value> NaN </value> <unknown_sec> 241 </unknown_sec> </ds> the contents of the hobbit_mpstat.hostname.send file is CPUs: 2 CPU0usr: 17.18 CPU0sys: 1.34 CPU0wt: 0.06 CPU0idl: 81.31 CPU1usr: 26.16 CPU1sys: 1.40 CPU1wt: 0.06 CPU1idl: 72.29 And I have copied the rrd_data.pl from the shire and can't find a typo in it. Hobbit Database

Hi We want to reinstall Hobbit on a new server but would like to keep the existing database as we have a long period of information that we would like to keep(backup) and extend on to. Were are the database/information stored on the current server and can we migrate it to a new server. Is there also a way to backup the data periodicly? [hobbit] "Info" column slow on latest snapshot (20080422)

Is anyone else experiencing a slow "info" page load with the 2008-04-22 snapshot? It takes about a minute to load. Also, I get this: Alerting: Alert configuration unavailable Admittedly, I just did an in-line install over the 4.2.0 release, so I don't know if it's just a matter of some configuration file weirdness.

Monitoring FLEXnet License Manager

Would anybody be willing to share their experience in monitoring LEXnet License Manager with Hobbit? I have been doing that, by simply monitoring the network port of the service, and users complain that it is not enough. Allegedly, it seems to continue to listen to the assigned ports, but stops handing out Matlab (...) licenses to the users. For those that have absolutely no idea of what I am talking about, this is a license manager, that among other things, is used for Matlab, Abacus, Maple and other engineering software. It runs as a network daemon, usually on port 27000 or close to that. NFS and shared clientlaunch.cfg files

Greetings fellow Hobbit-ers, I was recently tasked with monitoring 100+ solaris systems. Feeling undaunted I reached into my trusty IT toolbox and pulled out one of my favorite tools, Hobbit. What I encountered is as followed. The systems utilize NFS mounted directories. I installed the client files into /usr/local/ hobbit/client and voila! they were available to all of my systems. The issue that I encountered was that I wished to run different external scripts per client, but with a "shared" clientlaunch file I could not see how to do this.
