Hi all, Does anyone know what script/binary produces the HTML headers? I was trying to get sar-graphs working and did something that result in the top of my pages now having HTML from my old BigBrother setup? I have been running a client using the BigBrother client to test something, or I might have overwritten some code? Thanks in advance, Shaun

Multiple hobbit (bbproxy and bb server) queries

Hi guys, You may remember my questions from last week. Thanks again for these. I have now implemented it however I have a few questions (and possibly bugs?). I will first start by describing the setup. To keep things simple I'll call each hobbit server IP as either "A" "B" or "C" depending on the data centre. Data centre 1: bbproxy and bbserver (running on same box, A). bbproxy configured to send to B,C,A. bbserver configured to talk to A,B,C in hobbitserver.cfg. Data centre 2: bbproxy and bbserver (running on same box, B). bbproxy configured to send to C,A,B. bbserver configured to talk to B,C,A in hobbitserver.cfg. Data centre 3: bbproxy and bbserver (running on same box, C). bbproxy configured to send to A,B,C. bbserver configured to talk to C,A,B in hobbitserver.cfg. --------------------------------------------------- Firstly, everything looks good. However, if I am to stop bbserver at A (but keep bbproxy running at A) then shortly afterwards bbproxy at A will start crashing. I've tried changing the order of --bbdisplays and it seems like the bbproxy will crash if the last bbdisplay IP has been shutdown/not available. Is this known, or is there a workaround? To explain this better - Lets say bbproxy at site B is configured as --bbdisplays=B,C,A. If I kill the xymon server at site A then this proxy will crash shortly afterwards. Note I'm on x86 Solaris. My other question is this - currently if a proxy crashes and the other 2 xymon servers do not receive updates, most tests continue to stay green. I'm sure I've seen a configuration option but I can't seem to find it - can I configure these tests to go purple if they don't receive an update within the next 5-10 minutes? They've only just gone purple after 30 minutes, but we really need to know within 5 minutes if we haven't received a valid update. Many thanks, James.

Scratch that mail - I setuid on the fping binary (chmod 4755 /usr/local/sbin/fping), changed the hobbitserver.cfg accordingly and it is now working as expected. Just a question, have I created a 'security hole' or is this what is supposed to be done anyway? Mario

4.3.0 fping problem

Hi, I am putting in a new install with Xymon 4.3.0 beta 2. When I try to use 'fping' as my ping utility, I receive connection errors for all hosts, including the server itself: "Service conn on <host> is not OK : Host does not respond to ping System unreachable for 1 poll periods (0 seconds)" Using' hobbitping' works fine, but because it doesn't report back the times in microseconds correctly I need to use fping. I'm a little stumped as to what I'm missing to have fping work correctly. My sudoers file is set as: "xymon ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/local/sbin/fping". Typing in "sudo /usr/local/sbin/fping -Ae <host>" on the command line as my xymon user gives me a response with no password needed. My hobbitserver.cfg file has entry: FPING="sudo /usr/local/sbin/fping -Ae". [xymon at pxxxxxx etc]$ id uid=500(xymon) gid=500(xymon) groups=500(xymon) [xymon at xxxxxx etc]$ which fping /usr/local/sbin/fping [xymon at xxxxxx etc]$ ls -l /usr/local/sbin/fping -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 48827 Jul 8 13:07 /usr/local/sbin/fping [xymon at xxxxxx etc]$ /usr/local/sbin/fping -Ae y.y.y.y This program can only be run by root, or it must be setuid root. [xymon at xxxxxx etc]$ sudo /usr/local/sbin/fping -Ae y.y.y.y y.y.y.y is alive (0.85 ms) I've compiled with 'hobbitping' and then with 'fping', updating the hobbitserver.cfg with the same result. I don't think this is a DNS issue because hobbitping works and the IP's reported back to my tests are correct. Any ideas? Thanks, Mario

Client reports (only) giving intermittent RRD graphing after 4.2.0 -> 4.3.0-beta2 upgrade

Hello all, I've got a large testing install of Xymon going on with a couple hundred hosts reporting back client status via a bbmessage.cgi->bbproxy->hobbitd proxy over port 80. Things were working great with a stable 4.2.0 running on the hobbit server and Xymon-4.3.0.b2 on the proxy server. However when I upgraded the Hobbitd server to 4.3.0.b2, I lost reliable RRD graphing. Client reports are still coming in and being updated properly from a status perspective, but it seems the RRD graphers are getting only intermittently usable data. See attached image for an example. I've got a few manual custom graphs being generated with the NCV directive, and that stuff is being graphed just fine - it's only the built-in client reporting that suddenly stopped. I tried clearing out all the RRD files after the upgrade, thinking some sort of compatibility issue had occurred, but I'm still getting the same problem. USR2 logging on the hobbit_rrd processes shows nothing obvious, other than the ubiquitous "illegal attempt to update using time ... when last update time is ... (minimum one second step)" errors. There seem to be lots of client reports being logged by RRD, but I'm not certain I'm reading it properly. Rrdtool dump is showing lots of NaN entries in the RRD files. Thinking there was a change in memory usage that was truncating client reports combo-ized by bbproxy, I increased all the MAXMSG_* variables up to 2048, but that didn't seem to have any effect. If anyone has run into this before or has a suggestion on where to start, I'd appreciate it. Regards, Japheth Cleaver

Handling Downtime across timezones?

I have client systems spread over several time zones from AST (Atlantic Standard Time) to HST (Hawaii Standard Time) and everything in between. My hobbit server is in EST time zone. The client systems run an 'End of Day' [EOD] process every night. This process starts sometime between 12:30 am and 3:30am client LOCAL time and runs about 15 minutes. During the EOD run, several background processes are intentionally stopped. I don't want to have alerts generated if these processes are down/stopped during EOD but do want to be alerted if the processes are down outside of the EOD window. E.g.: * client systems in Puerto Rico run EOD at 12:30am AST, which is 11:30 pm EST (previous day) * client systems in Hawaii run EOD at 3:30 am HST, which is 9:30 am EST I have not figured out a way to do this - at least not with the DOWNTIME flag. It appears that the DOWNTIME flag on the hobbit server uses the hobbit servers' current time to determine if an event is occurring during the DOWNTIME interval; that's a problem for me since from the hobbit servers perspective, the EOD can happen over a 10 hour period. Any suggestions on how to configure things so that I don't get alerts for processes being 'down' from 12:30 - 3:30 am client local time? N.B - I'm going to be dealing with over 7000 clients Thanks, Tom Brand

scalability of hobbit/xymon ?

Hi, In my company, we are currently monitoring ~7000 devices (unix, microsoft, network, firewall, storage) in 13 datacenters in different countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, Belgium, France, Amsterdam, Belgium, UK). The architecture is simple: one hobbit cluster using Heartbeat in each datacenter (= 13 clusters) reporting to a central cluster by bbproxy and some custom scripts to concatenate/consolidate the bb-hosts files correctly. My question is for the future, we need to support 20 000 devices and i would like to know if hobbit is able to do that. (scalability). Indeed, my company doesn’t trust that it’s possible, and they want to move to HP BSM or EMC Smarts .... :-( Any experience about that is welcome. Regards, Nico
