xymon as a drop-in bb replacement

We ran BB 1.9 for years, then switched to BBPE about three years ago. Earlier this month, Quest announced end-of-life for BBPE so we're looking at our options. We have fewer than 500 clients reporting into Big Brother. But swapping them out for something else is going to painful and take time. If a xymon server will happily accept bb-client messages, then I could stand up a xymon server and replace clients through attrition. Has anyone else recently gone down this path? -- Do things because you should, not just because you can. Problem with NOTICE rule in alerts.cfg

I noticed that the xymon_alerts docs show there is a NOTICE keyword which is described as: NOTICE Rule matches if the message is a "notify" message. This type of message is sent when a host or test is disabled or enabled. I wanted to be alerted via a custom SMS script of any test as soon as it is enabled or disabled. So in the alerts.cfg file I had initially set up a line that I thought would trigger whenever a test was enabled or disabled like so: HOST=* SCRIPT $xymon-sms-alert $waaphone TIME=$smsalerthours FORMAT=SMS NOTICE As I was testing enabling and disabling, it appeared that I had gotten the syntax correct and I was off to the next thing. However, when a normal test went yellow, I received two SMS alerts for it. My logs shows that the CFID environment variable was showing that my new alert listed above was triggering the SMS as well as the PAGE=%firewalls/* alert that was supposed to trigger it. I then tried NOTICE SCRIPT $xymon-sms-alert $waaphone TIME=$smsalerthours FORMAT=SMS as well as NOTICE=* SCRIPT $xymon-sms-alert $waaphone TIME=$smsalerthours FORMAT=SMS and finally HOST=* NOTICE SCRIPT $xymon-sms-alert $waaphone TIME=$smsalerthours FORMAT=SMS But it seems that ANY status change including normal green, yellow, red, purple triggers this alert as well as any other correctly matching alert. I did some additional testing with all three above configurations using: xymond_alert --test fw.example.com testname And each of them showed (in order): *** Match with 'HOST=*' *** *** Match with 'SCRIPT $xymon-sms-alert $waaphone TIME=$smsalerthours FORMAT=SMS NOTICE' *** *** Match with 'NOTICE' *** *** Match with 'SCRIPT $xymon-sms-alert $waaphone TIME=$smsalerthours FORMAT=SMS' *** *** Match with 'NOTICE=*' *** *** Match with 'SCRIPT $xymon-sms-alert $waaphone TIME=$smsalerthours FORMAT=SMS' *** *** Match with 'HOST=* NOTICE' *** *** Match with 'SCRIPT $xymon-sms-alert $waaphone TIME=$smsalerthours FORMAT=SMS' *** Would love to get this working correctly and appreciate any help! -- Bill Arlofski Reverse Polarity, LLC http://www.revpol.com/

Problem with custom graphs after a re-install

A recent update of several libraries on a client's Xymon server required that Xymon be re-compiled and re-installed. Ever since that re-install, our custom graphs have stopped functioning and I see the following errors in rrd-status.log: 2013-02-08 14:17:18 RRD error updating /usr/local/xymon/data/rrd/servername.example.org/kitchen,LeftRefigerator.rrd from 10.1.0.10: tmplt contains more DS definitions than RRD Finding very little in my searches for: "tmplt contains more DS definitions than RRD" No configuration files have been changed, the test data and alerts for the custom test still work fine, so I am at a loss of where to look to solve this. Xymon alerting when it's been told not to

Duplicate email Recipients in Info page

Hi folks. Still working on cleaning up my xymon infrastructure. I believe I'm getting a better handle on things with my analysis.cfg and alerts.cfg settings now. I made some more changes to the analysis and alerts files to add other groups for emails. So now, I think I've duplicated a notify group in one or the other places. When I click on a certain host's info link on an application page, I'm seeing the same target recipient for things like conn, cpu, disk, memory, etc. What's the best way to troubleshoot my rules/settings to figure out where I'm setting the duplicated target recipients at? PS – I can send along the alerts and analysis files if that helps. Thanks much! Don K

Good news. Had reviewed the script.
