Setting win svcs for monitoring using Display names

You can add a text string at the end of the SVC statement SVC Symantec_AntiVirus startup=automatic status=started "TEXT=Symantec_Endpoint_Protection" It will display the text for the SVC so they are more human readable Mark Mulligan Associate Operations Engineer - Splunk and Xymon Admin P Please do not print this e-mail unless necessary

Two columns (tests), one graph?

Hi everyone. Using two custom external scripts, I have Xymon monitoring and graphing 3 temperatures from one device and 1 additional temperature from another device. Script(s) exist here: http://www.revpol.com/monitortemp Since the script was written to poll one device and up to 4 temperatures on that device, each device represents one column/test in Xymon with 1 or more temperature graphs using splitnvc. I'd like to combine all 4 temperatures on one graph - without rewriting my external script to poll both devices and report all 4 temps in one report if possible. Any hints, ideas? Ignore and trigger in client-local.cfg

Hi! I'm trying to get ignores and triggers to work in client-local.cfg, but can't get it to work. The background is that we have an important log which is extremely active and we are currently missing entries due to this. Rather than setting a huge value for the amount of bytes to send to Xymon (log:filename:size), I want to apply a ignore/trigger combo instead to filter out the noise before sending the log to Xymon. The man page is not very descriptive of the possibilities, it just states: # "ignore EXPRESSION" # Must follow a "log:..." entry. Lines matching the # regular EXPRESSION are not sent to the Xymon server. # "trigger EXPRESSION" # Must follow a "log:..." entry. Lines matching the # regular EXPRESSION are always sent to the Xymon server. # Use this for extremely critical errors that must be # reported. First, is it at all possible to specify a trigger on things we want to pick up, and discard everything else with a "catch all" ignore expression? Additional Client messages

Hi, I have a number of hosts where I need to check the ps listing every minute and alert when something is wrong, but I dont want or need to run the rest of the client agent tests more frequently than the standard 5 minute interval. I thought the answer was to create a client extension to send another ps listing as a client message with a unique Collector ID and run this as frequently as required When I do this, I find on the server that the client data does indeed get updated every minute but the extra ps listing (which I put in a section called '[ps]') is not apparently processed against analysis.cfg. I know I can do this all on the client with a status message but I wanted to keep the configuration central and re-use the PROCS settings in analysis.cfg. Anyone any thoughts how to do this? -- Andy

Ping multiple IP addresses by name

One of my hosts is multi-homed and I'd like to perform a ping test against both interfaces. Each interface has its own IP address and its own name. I'd like to avoid embedding ip addresses in my hosts.cfg. I've been able to get close to the behavior I want with: 0.0.0.0 foo.bar.com # conn=worst,1.2.3.4 but, of course, I have just embedded an IP address in my file I'd really like to refer to the second interface by its own name. It seems to ruin xymonnet to make the line look like: 0.0.0.0 foo.bar.com # conn=worst,goo.bar.com The conn result-page stops updating (even if I remove the name from hosts.cfg.) and I have to restart to make it start again I can come close the behavior I want by making my hosts.cfg: 0.0.0.0 goo.bar.com # nodisp 0.0.0.0 foo.bar.com # and adding a line to combo.cfg like: foo.bar.com.baz = (foo.bar.com.conn && goo.bar.com.conn) but then my combined test result appears as 'baz' rather than 'conn' and my tests are smeared across two files. Can anyone else suggest another way? -- Do things because you should, not just because you can. Monitoring iostat performance

Recently, we had a publicly visible outtage as a result of one of our load balancers exceeding the IOPS capability of its system drives. We'd like to extend xymon (currently installed on CentOS6 /32 with defaults) so that it can monitor IOPS for all servers. Specifically, we'd like to see wrqm/s and probably %util. What's the most straightforward way to accomplish this? The other alternative is to create some form of internal script, which is doable but not preferable if there's an off-the-shelf tool available. -Ben

Do > I need to use something else? Not "mutt -x", that requires someone sitting at a terminal. Just plain MAILX="mutt" works fine with my mutt+sendmail+CentOS 6.3 test setup. I am not sure if it solves your problem with the weird characters. My normal mail client (Thunderbird) displays UTF-8 and UTF-16 characters without a hitch, but it does depend on the program you use to read the alerts, and on how the text is generated.
