semi-OT -- anyone using hobbit-mailack with ms-exchange 2003 as the MTA?

My exchange guys are having trouble with this. I'm trying to send mail to a cell phone from hobbit@<server.domain>, return address hobbit@<domain> -- and need to get the result forwarded to hobbit@<server.domain> (our hobbit server is not accessable from the outside world, so I'm specifying a return address on our exchange email server). The email is getting back to exchange, we just can't seem to figure out how to get it back to the hobbit server. The alternative would be to build a box to sit in the dmz and set it up to receive the email and forward it -- I thought it would be easier to just get exchange to handle the forwarding. MS-Exchange 2003 on MS Advanced Server 2003. Everything I find via google seems to be Exchange 5.0/5.5, or involve two different domains. TIA Tom Kauffman NIBCO, Inc. The simple work around would be to setup whatever account is getting the email now to just forward to hobbit at server since, presumably, your exchange server can see hobbit pretty easily. Hobbit vs. Bigbrother graphing

I was using bigbrother and larrd to graph my trends. I used to be able to see all my cpu graphs on one web page but all the hosts were on different graphs. I like the option to have all on one graph, but I would also still like all hosts on one page with individual graphs. Is this possible?

Does your oracle test run on the same box? We're running a hacked version of the 'roracle' script from deadcat; one of the hacks is to report 'blue' if the backup is running. And our backup script sets a specific lockfile at the start, removing it at the end. And we monitor the lockfile existence, to alert on a backup running too long. Maybe this would be a better approach? Possible send 'clear' instead of 'blue', if the 'blue' triggers the notice? Hi Henrik... Just some feature I would like to see in a future (not so distant :P) version of hobbit.... 1)The first one was about navigation in hobbit Page/subpages/tests... At least at my site we have a good amount of page with subpages and moving with the "back" or returning to the first page is not always a really nice things because you've to navigate another time to the page when you was. It could be nice to have a series of link at the top header showing the entire path to the page with link to move directly to that page For example if I'm in the page Unix, subpage Database, subpage Oracle, subpage Production, into the info column of host called prod1 it could be nice if hobbit can display something like this at the top (or bottom) of the page: Main > Unix > Database > Oracle > Production > prod1:info With Main (the hobbit main page), Unix, Database, Oracle, Production as link to the respective pages and prod1:info just showing as text to see on what page the user is. It will simplify the navigation a lot. 2)Another nice thing to have in my opinion is a "dynamic" bb2 page that called from the menu (like the bb2.html) will generate a status report of all the yellow/red/purple status for all host in that page and all of the subpages under it. 3) Something about hobbit-hostgraphs and graph-multi definition... It could be nice to have something like the general enable/disable page where it's possible to choose hosts and graphs from a list generated automatically instead of having the graphs hardcoded into the template. It could show all column that also have a definition in the hobbitgraph.cfg file with some standard. For example selecting hosts that have a column called jvm and that have definition called jvm1-multi jvm2-multi jvmN-multi, it could show those "n" column to select from. It could simplify the write of graphs definition so that it's possible to create one graphN-multi definition for each value in a rrd to have them compared by hosts into the graphs... 4) Finally something about the linecount for multigraph in the column view... currently one of the problem with graphs that have a big number of value to be reported (for example some of the bea graphs regarding jms and jdbc connections) is that those graphs are unreadable if displayed will all the value in a single graph and will display a not so good page if defined as multigraph because the linecount will go to a really high number (more then 10 times the number of graphs to be displayed) and that will leave a many wrong links on the page. It could be good if developer of custom check could send a " to know about how many rrdfile are there to be graphed and a  value to tell him how many of those rrd file have to be graphed in the same graph. This will also remove the need to have to define the column as multigraph. It could also be nice if it will be possible to set linecount=0 to view all the data in a single graphs (if someone want to do it). This will let rrd file with many dataset inside to display a single host per graphs and dataset with just one or 2 dataset to display one graph each 4-5 rrd file. Francesco

Here's another solution.... Write a script to handle the paging for this server and service (oracle). Directly from the man bb command :D disable HOSTNAME.TESTNAME DURATION <additional text> Disables a specific test for DURATION minutes. This will cause the status of this test to be listed as "blue" on the BBDISPLAY server, and no alerts for this host/test will be generated. If DURATION is given as a number followed by s/m/h/d, it is interpreted as being in seconds/minutes/hours/days respectively. To disable all tests for a host, use an asterisk "*" for TESTNAME. enable HOSTNAME.TESTNAME Re-enables a test that had been disabled. So you can execute bb hobbitserver "disable dbservername.* 2h Backup time" before shutting down the database and bb hobbitserver "enable dbserver.*" just at the end. You did it right but you also have to change the shared memory parameters for your system. The location of those parameters change by OS type. At this moment it's not possible to do anything like that I think ... The only 3 alternatives I see at this moment are: 1) writing a script that will change the DOWNTIME inside the bb-hosts file at the start and at the end of the backup, hobbit should read it for the next test and not send alert or notice 2) You can enable the NOTICE alert only during the non backup time so for example if you do backup between 02:00-05:00 you can enable NOTICE only from 0-2 and from 5-24 and sending a disable via bb command at the start of the backup. With this you'll not know if someone will disable the text during the backup hour but at least you get the alert if the host is down (better then having hobbit not alert on a fault probably). 3) At least for the "oracle" test if it's local to the oracle database you can also change it to check for example for the existance of a file named something like /oracle/backup_now and if that file exist change the script to not do any checks and send a clear state to hobbit. For the procs to do the same I think you've to modify the hobbit client too and I don't know how simple it can be. Okay, let me explain this again :) If I ignore pages for a specific time interval, say 2 hours while backups are being done, then every minute that the backups complete before that interval is over, is a minute that the database is essentially not monitored, which is not acceptable. Example: via DOWNTIME in bb-hosts, or via TIME specifications in hobbit-alerts.cfg as you mention, [----------window where no pages are sent for red status of "oracle" or "procs"------------] [-----------------database backups--------------][------ something can break here -------] My problem is that something can break during that post-backup interval, and nobody will be notified. Making the interval shorter is not an option because due to the nature of backups, the amount of time it takes to do the backup fluctuates on a daily basis. It could take 30 minutes monday night, an hour tuesday night, 10 minutes wednesday night, 73 minutes thurs.. Using the bb disable command from a script is not a good solution because that makes NOTICE alerts get sent out, which wakes people up for no reason. The DOWNTIME option in bb-hosts has the ability to set the status of services blue without sending NOTICE alerts.
