Hi all, Is it possible to get hobbitd_rrd to generate a status message when operating normally? With 4.2RC it generates a red status when it crashed (I tried some hacks ;), but no green status when it is restarted, so the status gets purple and has to be deleted manually. Regards, Thomas

Hello, Could someone let me know how I can use 2 different domain names when excluding hosts in the hobbit-alerts.cfg? Example: exhost=%(server).test.com %(server).abc.intra. I tried to use a comma and space between the 2 domain names but it isn't taking it. Thanks in advance for any info

Ports problem?

Aha! Ok, thanks. I made the mistake of running that manually, and it kind of short circuited every CONN test out there on the running server. Oops. The only way currently is to run bbtest-net with the --debug option, and grep the output for "DNS lookup failed". I've been asked before, so I really should add some way of easily finding this information, or at least provide a way of logging it. BTW, you don't have 183 hostnames - you have 141. The 183 is the number of times a hostname lookup was done, so some of them was via the cache that bbtest-net has. This is because the same hostname may be needed for multiple tests, e.g. if you use it in http url's that you test. Hi- by the way, my cluster stuff is finally working the way I want. Thanks for putting up with my ignorance on how the hobbitd and bbproxy stuff co-exist (or don't)! In my bbtests column of my main server, I see: DNS statistics: # hostnames resolved : 141 # succesful : 136 # failed : 5 # calls to dnsresolve : 183 .... any idea what's the easiest way for me to discern "which" of my 183 hosts are failing DNS resolution? So far, very very cool. I'm using hobbit to monitor just boatloads of stuff. --------------------------------------------------------- Kent C. hobbitd keeps dying, cannot bind...

Same cluster setup - the node I'm having all my issues with is my cluster head node- the one that's the server, and also the proxy server. I am having a devil of a time keeping hobbit running. Sometimes I can get it going... but it never seems to stay up for more than 5 minutes, and even after a full clean reboot, I can't get hobbitd to start at all. Weird hobbit/proxy/CONN catch-22?

OK guys, here's what I have (thank to all that helped me thus far, especially Henrik!) My setup involves a hidden cluster-- which means that from my MAIN Hobbit server (BBDISPLAY), I cannot see nor ping the cluster nodes, but I *can* see and talk to the cluster "head node". Based on prior suggestions, I set it all up as follows: Main BB server has config entries for everything, including the cluster head node AND the cluster nodes it "can't see" directly. These entries are listed as: Hidden.ip.address.here host.name.here # noconn "noconn" obviously, since the network tests from the main Hobbit server would fail! --- Next, I set up the cluster head node as a BB server. Actually, its main purpose is to run the network and such tests, and act as a proxy server for the whole cluster. --- It all works. Sort of! On my main BB display, I see the entries for the "unreachable" cluster nodes, which is very cool. I see the cpu, disk, files, msgs, etc. But-- there's no connectivity (conn) information or status information. --- Catch-22? How do I get the "conn" test to show up? If I list "conn" in the bb-hosts on my main Hobbit server, I am going to assume that the conn tests will have issues, since that server(s) really are unreachable from the BBDISPLAY host. But if I set it up listed as "noconn" on the BBDISPLAY server-- um, there's no conn data/column (a Homr Simpson "D'oh!" goes here). Any ideas? The BBPROXY setup described above is working as far as information exchange, as I am indeed seeing cpu, disk, files, info, msgs, ports, procs, and that's all very very cool and good. But I need 'conn' most of all. Help! (and thanks) By the way - a suggestion for stuff down the road a bit: When I set up my proxy server (./configure -server), there was of course all of the requirements I had to have met, such as having RRDTOOL, libpng, etc etc all there. That's great, except I have no intention of having this other server doing anything other than running a few tests, and forwarding it all on to the BBD server. No data, no RRD, no graphs, no apache, no html. One big suggestion I have (since the proxy is such a cool thing) is to perhaps including things like: ./configure -proxy-only ? Just a thought.
