I don't like the idea of performing ping tests from the script so it just checks the status of the conn test, if it is red it scripts that host for the xsnmp round. It might be better to send a clear message. Hobbit will recheck the conn test if it is red anyway. My main problem was that we check 55 difference devices with bb-xsnmp and many of them for different tests like cpu, memory, temperature, uptime, fans, power, disk, bgp, etc. If an access point goes down, it is relatively minor for us but bb-xsnmp would hang causing about 300 purple alerts for good hosts. With this small modification only the one access point tests would go purple and everything else would be ok. Wouldn't it be better to query hobbit and check the status of the connection than run the ping test again? Thanks very much for the reply (and Andy and Henrik also)... However, the default time is in minutes, not seconds. I was trying to figure out why status+87600 wasn't turning purple after 24.5 hours :) >From the man page (thanks again Andy). Hi, I've been using BB for several years, and now when i had to build a new machine i found Hobbit!! Hobbit is much better than BB, but i have a question though. I want to send and email-alert to myself if i get a red alert on any of my monitored systems on any servicers. How can i do this? Is it possbile to use some kind of wildcard? I tried HOST=* but it didn't work. Thanks in advance / Martin

Script to help migration from BB to Hobbit

Hi all here's a quick & very dirty script which eases BB to Hobbit migration, by re-disable in Hobbit all the tests which were disabled in BB. It requires GNU date and GNU ls. You just have to change the following inside the script : OLD_DISABLED=/home/bbuser/bbvar/disabled BB=/home/hobbituser/server/bin/bb BBDISP=10.20.30.40 TESTMODE=N By default "test mode" is on, so no disable is actually un. I have a version of bb-xsnmp.pl running directly under hobbit. Most of the graphs already work with the hobbit server. I ripped out all the bb-combo.sh stuff as hobbit doesn't have combo.sh but that is just to get it to run under the hobbit server. I also added support for querying the hobbit server to see if a conn test is red to prevent hangs. This was a bigger deal as I would find that bb-xsnmp.pl would hang if a small non-important device failed such as a wireless access point and all the other devices would go purple instantly. I could give the patches but my version of bb-xsnmp.pl is based on a beta version I received from someone else that fixed other issues, so I will include the whole thing. Changes from 4.1.2 -> 4.1.2p1 (10 Nov 2005) ------------------------------------------- Bugfixes: * hobbitd could crash when processing a "combo" message, due to an incorrect test of the color of one message inside the combo-message before that color was actually deciphered. * hobbitd_alert would crash when attempting to save a checkpoint while cleaning up a "dead" alert. * Disk graphs would show up with all graphs in a single image, when the status message included any colored icons (typically, when the status was red or yellow). * The handling of alerts was counting the duration of an event based on when the color last changed. This meant that each time the color changed, any DURATION counters were reset. This would cause alerts to not go out if a status was changing between yellow and red faster than any DURATION setting. Changed this to count the event start as the *first* time the status went into an alert state (yellow or red, usually). * An idle hobbitd process would accumulate zombie processes. Improvements: * When a status goes yellow->red, the repeat-interval is now cleared for any alerts. This makes sure you get an alert immediately for the most severe state seen. This only affects the first such transition; if the status later changes between yellow/red, this normal REPEAT interval applies. If I make a script that sends data like a BF larrd script can I just add the usual settings to the hobbitserver.cfg RRD2TEST=testname=ncv and GRAPHS and then expect the graph to show in trends ? or do I need to make additional changes like making the external scripts ? Regards, Thomas

hobbitd_larrd problem

I suspect that the hobbitd_larrd has a memory problem. Yesterday I renamed a host, and I noticed that the graphs was not updated anymore on any of my hosts on my primary display server. So I restarted hobbit here. This morning on my secondary display server, the memory usage was almost total. Attached image shows the graph. It was hobbitd_larrd that was using all the memory. After restart of hobbit on this server the usage came back to normal. Regards, Thomas
