Feature request - thresholds for CPU utilisation (not load average)

Something I have been wondering about for a while is whether it would be possible to have thresholds on the CPU utilisation. While we have thresholds for load averages, in some cases these have to be relatively high (e.g. 2 to 4 times the number of CPUs) due to the impact of IO wait on load average (e.g, our SAN-attached NFS servers often have a load average of over 10, with a CPU utilisation of 50%, when reading over 10k blocks/sec). However, it then makes it difficult to catch a process in CPU-race (as much less IO gets done, IO wait is low, and load average is almost exactly 1 *CPUs). The CPU utilisation is already reported (in the vmstat data), which is how I know the above about our NFS servers (vmstat/vmstat1 graph). This would also remove the complication of thresholds differing between servers with different numbers of CPUs, and maybe work better for Windows clients (which don't seem to have a concept of load average). (I don't mean thresholds for load average should be removed ... I would love to have thresholds for both load average and CPU utilisation). Regards, Buchan

strange behavior for hobbit 4.2 with allinone patch

Hello Henrik, I write you because I discovered a strange behavior on hobbit 4.2 with the all in one patch. Before the all in one patch, when I had to stop hobbit, all semaphores and shared segments were liberated. But, after we applied the allinone patch, we always have one shared segment and one semaphore used by hobbit even if no more hobbit process are running. root at powell:/home/etienne/hobbit/hobbit-4.2.0# ps -ef | grep [h]obbit root at powell:/home/etienne/hobbit/hobbit-4.2.0# root at powell:/home/etienne/hobbit/hobbit-4.2.0# ipcs |grep hobbit 0x09038018 327690 hobbit 600 131072 0 0x09038018 884753 hobbit 600 3 root at powell:/home/etienne/hobbit/hobbit-4.2.0# I tested this on several linux and behavior is the same. It seems really strange to me. Could you confirm me that this is not an issue ? When I discovered that behavior, I though at first it could be from bbwin patch, but, it seems to appear when the all inone patch is applied. BBWIN 0.9 CPU Always 100%

Hi all, I'm running BBWIN 0.9 on an 8-way Win2003 server and it is always reporting the CPU at 100%, but when you sign in to the server, performance monitor shows CPU at very little utilization. Has anyone seen this behavior before? Is there anything I can do to correct this? MSGS test multiple log file monitoring

Hello, We're running aix hobbit client against linux hobbit server 4.2.0 with allinone patch. We're currently experiencing difficulty on msgs test alerts while using multiple log file monitoring for various groups. To explain further when msgs test state is already yellow or red if another alert is captured we're not getting alerts. ##### hobbit-alerts.cfg HOST=foo.com MAIL tech at foo.com FORMAT=PLAIN COLOR=RED,YELLOW SERVICE=msgs,disk EXGROUP=customergrp MAIL support at foo.com FORMAT=PLAIN COLOR=RED,YELLOW For above example in my theory; If msgs test turns yellow or red for group customergrp test an alert sent to support at foo.com, but during that period (30mins) If there's another alert captured not related to GROUP=customergrp alert is not sent. In this example tech at foo.com is missing an alert related to it's log file monitoring. ##### hobbit-clients.cfg HOST=foo.com LOG %.* %(Error|ERROR|error) COLOR=red LOG %.* %(?-i)Severe COLOR=yellow LOG %.* %(?-i)Warning COLOR=yellow LOG /var/log/applicaton/apps.log %(?-i)error COLOR=yellow GROUP=customergrp Any ideas, help appreciated. Hi, Can anyone explain to me how to disable Hobbit to send mail with root user? I've define an alternate mailaccount and receive mail with it but Hobbit server keep sending mail with root user and this is of course block because the Hobbit server is not a member of a 2K3 Windows Domain. Hello, I publish today BBWin 0.11. This is the new stuffs I put in it (focused on centralized mode) : BBWin 0.11 Preview version - February 11th 2008 ------------------- * svcs centralized mode with autorestart option * new agent to be used with centralized mode : filesystem.dll - file client-local.cfg implemented : support md5 and sha1 checksum algorithms - dir client-local.cfg implemented - logfile client-local.cfg implemented - linecount client-local.cfg implemented - back quotes for FILENAME and DIRECTORY implemented. * eventlog client-local.cfg implemented : msgs.dll * fix initialisation error on bbwinupdate agent * prevent loading bbwin.cfg agent configurations when centralized mode enabled * fix memory leak on bbwinupdate agent * fix memory leak on service BBWin.exe when centralized mode enabled * Use ip address instead of mac address for the graph title for network interfaces (ifstat) * multiple bbdisplay supported when centralized mode enabled * Who agent now use qwinsta executable output instead of native functions * Centralized Mode implemented directly in future hobbit 4.3 and with a patch for hobbit 4.2 Here the link for the download : http://sourceforge.net/projects/bbwin As you can see, almost all options from client-local.cfg are now implemented for the Windows client. Syntax for client-local.cfg and for hobbit-clients.cfg are the same than Unix side so it will be very easy to use. Client autoupdate is the latest feature to implement to be at the same level than Unix hobbit client. Centralized mode server part is now included in current hobbit snapshot (future 4.3). For hobbit 4.2, there is a new patch available on the bbwin webpage : http://bbwin.sourceforge.net/ Options from client-local.cfg only work with centralized mode. To enable these new features for centralized mode, you will have to turn on central mode and load the new agent filesystem.dll in your BBWin.cfg which is not loaded by default at this time. For the moment, local mode is still the default mode for BBWin. When hobbit 4.3 will be released, BBWin default mode will become central and filesystem.dll loaded. It would help a lot if people who have testing hobbit servers could try to use BBWin new features to find out if there are any bugs in it :-) People who are testing BBWin centralized mode with 0.10 should upgrade to 0.11 and get the new patch for hobbit 4.2 or the current snapshot of hobbit. Asked a question a little while back about this on the bbwin user list and thought I'd share in case anyone else might have a use for it. See the attached file for explanation and such. Save this to the BBWIN\bin directory and add the appropriate line under the cfg file (explained in the comments at the top of this script). Note that this code assumes the compress.exe utility (from the Ms Resource Tools kit) is present in the PATH, but it can be easily altered to something else (this script backs up the info to the BBWIN\logs directory - this functionality is easy enough to strip out, see script for details).
