In the old days when BB was using CGI's coded as shell scripts, special characters that could cause security problems were banned from the URL's sent to CGI-programs, and the bbgen/Hobbit CGI's did the same. I think it's safe to drop that restriction now. None of the Hobbit CGI's ever deal with the query-parameters in the shell wrappers. I'm getting a bunch of core files in my ~/hobbit/server directory. bb-hosts NAME Option question

Hello, Ok, I have a question on NAME:hostname bb-host option... In the man page, it says that NAME "overrides the default hostname used on the OVERVIEW web pages". Here is what I have set up. ###.###.###.### srv645a # NAME:"SIS Node A (Mercy Drive)" Now, this works beautifully on the display page, and renames srv645a to SIS Node A (Mercy Drive). However, when I try to click on any of the service icons (conn/info, etc), it gives me an invalid status page. I've noticed that at the end of the url for each service icon, instead of now DISPLAYNAME=srv645a, it's putting " DISPLAYNAME=SIS%20Node%20A%20(Mercy%20Drive)". If I type in by hand srv645 at the end of the DISPLAYNAME, it works, and retrieves the current status of that server. Is that how it is supposed to work? I had assumed (maybe incorrectly) that this would be a change only on the web display, but not on the front pages. The thing is that no one, outside of our windows administrators, will know what srv645a is, so we wanted to make it something a little more descriptive. We also tried COMMENT:hostname, but, the NAME looked a lot better. Is there another tag to use to replace the name, only on the display page, but leave everything else as the real name? And if the groups that need to be notified that a service is disabled for maintenance are different from the people that need to be notified of an outage? For example, when maintenance is started we don't want the on-call pager being alerted that a service has been disabled for maintenance - the purpose of a blue dot is so the person carrying the pager isn't woken up unnecessarily. Instead of the "page notify-admin" recipient, I implemented a new command in the Hobbit protocol called "notify". When you send a "notify" command to the hobbit server, you also pass it a hostname, a testname, and a text message. Hobbit then sends this message through the alert module just as a normal alert-message about a status that has gone red - and the message is sent out using the normal methods configured for the recipients for that particular host+test combination. So what happens is that when you disable a test, everyone that would normally receive an alert about that test will get a message that it has been disabled. And the same when it is re-enabled, of course. I think that makes more sense than sending to the generic "notify-admin" recipient. Eeeeewwww.... Dropping support for the BB "page" protocol for messages will break a lot of things that I make use of for administrative events alerts that aren't associated with a particular host or status. Is there any way that this can be worked around?? feature request: display amount of time that an acknowledged alert has till next page

I've been testing out the acknowledgment feature in hobbit and thought of a feature that would be helpful, at least to me: Underneath the line "Acked by:" it'd be cool to have a line that used the estimated time to repair value the user entered and displayed a message like "Repair completion time is estimated to be XX:XX" For example, say my webserver's filesystem fills up unexpectedly and needs to be cleaned out, so the oncall engineer acknowledges the page and thinks it'll take him 20 mins to get things back in order. It's 8:25AM when the oncall engineer acknowledges the page and starts removing old files on the webserver. The status display in hobbit would be: Status unchanged in 0 hours, 15 minutes Status message received from 0.0.0.0 Current acknowledgment: Removing runaway process log files Acked by: oncallsupport (1.1.1.1) Repair completion time is estimated to be: 8:45AM ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ with this additional line at the bottom, so that users not working on the alert can have an idea of what is being done and when to expect it'll be corrected. [hobbit] RC4 Index not creating

Ok. Removed the hobbit server and data directories, and then rebooted the server. After the reboot, tried to install RC4 again. All appears to be working. And this time, it asked for the log directory again.
