Using variables in clientlaunch.cfg?

I plan on making some custom graphs for things like tomcat thread counts. The documentation for creating custom graphs should get me through that part, but the problem is my environment is such that groups of my monitored servers share a common home directory. Fortunately, the hobbitclient uses the hostname as part of most of its dynamic files, so there are no conflicts. The problem I forsee is lets say that servers 1-10 all share a common client homedirectory (SAN mount). Lets say that I want to collect data on tomcat thread counts on just some of the servers. I cannot just add an entry to clientlaunch.cfg, as this will affect ALL the servers. Can you suggest how I should handle this? The only way I can think of, is to define a generic "launcher" script, like: [launcher] ENVFILE /home/hobbit/client/etc/hobbitclient.cfg CMD /home/hobbit/client/ext/launcher.sh INTERVAL 5m This launcher.sh script could do something like: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ #!/bin/sh if [ -f /home/hobbit/client/ext/$HOSTNAME_tct.sh ] then /home/hobbit/client/ext/$HOSTNAME_tct.sh fi ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This would launch an external script that matched the hostname, if it existed, otherwise does nothing. This would allow all of the custom ext scripts to be in the same shared directory, with different names. Another option would be, if clientlaunch could handle variables: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ [tomcat_threads] ENVFILE /home/hobbit/client/etc/hobbitclient.cfg CMD /home/hobbit/client/ext/$HOSTNAME_tct.sh INTERVAL 5m ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I imagine this method though would generate errors when hobbit tries to execute the script on the hosts where it does not exist? -Charles

Henrik, I've seen this come up a few times on the list that folks wanting Hobbit monitors have no place to put them. I've thought about setting up a site for this in the past or maybe setting up something on Sourceforge. Is this something others would be interested in? Or maybe even have an area off the hobbitmon sf page called "The Shire". BB has deadcat (which is slower than xmas)...I think Hobbit is mature enough to warrant it's own area (yes, the BB scripts will work with Hobbit but Hobbit has much more functionality and is different enough that having it's own monitors would benefit everyone). Thoughts? =G=

Event start time

Is there a way to query the server for the time that a status message caused a notification? I use the start time currently as a unique item to ensure I only open 1 ticket for each notification and have noticed that time() - $ENV{DOWNSECS} isn't always equal due to processing timeframes and delays. passing options to fping command

I'd like to increase the retry count for fping from the default of 3 to 5-6, and I'm not sure my change is taking effect. In hobbitserver.cfg, I've passed "-r5" to the FPING variable. FPING="/usr/sbin/fping -r5" Checking the bb-network.log file, it appears that fping is still using the default flags "OrdAstILe": status hostname.conn green  Wed Jul 26 10:44:20 2006 conn ok What am I doing wrong? It seems that a lot of people (including me) have a need to create custom graphs that require building an ext script for even the simplest guage type graphs. I'm about to go through the NCV docs and attempt to create a guage-type graph to track tomcat garbage collection times. What would be cool is if hobbit had a way of handling simple tasks like this, defined on the server side in client-local.cfg, similar to the LOG option. Here is an example of a tomcat garbage collection log: $ tail -5 gc.log 15424.931: [Full GC 48511K->48216K(1022400K), 0.4856710 secs] 15485.431: [Full GC 48540K->48217K(1022400K), 0.4745360 secs] 15545.927: [Full GC 48513K->48218K(1022400K), 0.4845780 secs] 15606.449: [Full GC 48513K->48215K(1022400K), 0.5136750 secs] 15667.010: [Full GC 48511K->48216K(1022400K), 0.5008330 secs] It would be so cool if you could make a definition in client-local.cfg similar to: "graph:filename:PATTERN:x-axis_name:y-axis_name" So an example usage of this would be: graph:/var/log/tomcat/gc.log:"%.+%d.%d secs":"Garbage Collection":seconds Just an idea for the drawing board :) Hmm this would also solve my problem of ext scripts having unique names in a shared directory :) -Charles

Hi all I am trying to get my new company to give Hobbit a go. (I know full well they will like it once they see it) However, being a civil service department, everything needs to be justified and proposed and planned and discussed, and nothing gets done in a hurry. Currently, I need to put together a document for my PHB proclaiming the virtues and benefits of running Hobbit, and instead of reinventing the wheel, I was wondering if any of you have already gone through this process and either 1. Have a document I can use as a starting point. 2. Have some tips or pointers on how to approach this. Also, a while back we all contributed towards a list of companies using Hobbit. Was that ever consolidated, saved and made available somewhere? Regards Vernon

There is an option to snmptrap (from net snmp) to send full OIDs, otherwise they are cut. Instead of "snmptrap -v 1", the options should be : "snmptrap -v 1 -Of" Otherwise only the end of the OID is sent. msgs column gone haywire

hi everyone, i recently installed hobbit on solaris clients. for the first few weeks the clients were doing okay. no hiccups were encountered on the compilation, installation and configuration. this week while i was browsing on the webpages generated, i was surprised to see the results (see http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/9020/msgshd5.jpg) two of the clients were reporting alternating green and clear "msgs" columns when solaris clients were not supposed to be reporting any of it. i am using version 4.1.2p1 of hobbit. anyone got the same weird experience? can someone point me to the right area to look for? the hobbitclient.cfg file and the clientlaunch.cfg is the default one installed when compiling hobbit. i cross checked the files with the other clients and they are uniform throught the 300+ hosts and restarted the client daemons. only the two hosts on the screenshot are experiencing erratic this behaviour. i have tried copying the hobbit client installation from other clients -- result: same behavior. i have also tried the command [bb localhost "drop yakal"] -- result: same behavior. any other suggestions as to what to do? your inputs are highly appreciated. thanks in advance.
