client-local.cfg and shared nfs homedirs

Lets say I have a setup where I have 12 web servers: web1 web2 web3... And they all have a common homedir (SAN). Hobbit is very good about naming most of its logfiles etc with the hostname in them, so thusfar I have not had a problem where a file or setting for one host caused problems on another host. Now, what I am wondering is, if I use client-local.cfg on the hobbit server, and define some logfile checks. These checks get propagated to the clients. I know that I can specify hostnames in client-local.cfg, but what happens to the data when it is propagated to the clients? If it ends up in a generic named file on the client, then it will take effect for ALL of my clients, which would be bad (assuming I want to monitor different files on each of them). I guess I should just stop speculating and try it :) But I figured I would ask to see if anyone else, or Henrik already knows how this works. -Charles

You can use hobbit_perl_client http://sourceforge.net/projects/hobbit-perl-cl/ One of the 3 script is done to monitor netapp filers via rsh (I'm monitoring 10 netapp storage with it). It check status, cluster, environment and temperature, disk and inode, transfer and ops/s (via sysstat), cifs operation/s, snapshot space, space used by the newest and oldest snapshot, snapmirror transfer, qtree quotas and user quotas. Disk, inode, cpu and temperature can be graphed directly by hobbit. Sysstat can be graphed using ncv and to have graphs for snapmirror/snapshot/quotas you've to patch hobbit 4.2 source with the included patch (this will also remove the necessity to configure ncv for the other tests because they're included in the patch). Since I can't run Hobbit client directly on the filer, my next approach was to run Hobbit client on the NetApp admin host, and list all the NetApp volumes which are NFS-mounted. But the DISK check seems to be ignoring NFS mounts. Questions: 1. Is there a way to have DISK un-ignore selected NFS mounts? 2. Are there some other clever ways to have Hobbit monitor a NetApp filer? Desktop Client

I have created an application using wxpython that reports Hobbit/Big Brother events directly to your desktop, for either Unix or Windows platforms. There are three main components: 1> You configure your hobbit-alerts.cfg to send all events to a small perl script, which formats the data and sends it to a local UNIX socket. 2> Another perl script runs daemonizede and reads in the data from the UNIX socket. It then sends the events to any clients connected to it. 3> The client recieves all events, and does any filtering and further formatting for the end-user. It's still very alpha, but fully functional. Mainly I created this for our NOC which is sometimes very busy and occasionally alerts get missed if someone isn't eyeballing the web page constantly. The client can create pop-up windows, play sound files, etc that some are already familiar with from the old "bbtray" application. Although it still needs a lot of work, I'd like to start distributing it for people to try out and maybe offer suggestions or even assistance with. Is "The Shire" ready for user distribution of projects yet?

Monitoring old hardware

Does anyone have one of these?? HP 989 running MPE/ix version 7 If so, how are you monitoring it, if at all?? I guess it's an HP box running some kind of *nix. That's all I know. Don't even know if there's a C compiler or other tools on it. Blasted thing crashed a couple of times recently and irritated a customer, so I have to get *something* working for it... The problem related to graphs with 20 minutes interval is in the creation of the rrd file >From the rrdcreate help page http://oss.oetiker.ch/rrdtool/doc/rrdcreate.en.html DS:ds-name:GAUGE | COUNTER | DERIVE | ABSOLUTE:heartbeat:min:max The ``heartbeat'' defines the maximum acceptable interval between samples. If the interval between samples is less than ``heartbeat'', then an average rate is calculated and applied for that interval. If the interval between samples is longer than ``heartbeat'', then that entire interval is considered ``unknown''. Note that there are other things that can make a sample interval ``unknown'', such as the rate exceeding limits, or even an ``unknown'' input sample. The heartbeat used by hobbit for ncv (and other graphs) is 600 (10 min) and cannot be changed with parameters so you need to change the source code (but it will change heartbeat for all the NCV graphs you do and you've to remember to change it when installing a new version) or we have to wait for Henrik to do a new rrd extendible interface for all our special graphs cases :D If you need to change you've to change it in the hobbitd/rrd/do_ncv.c, search for "DS:", you'll find 2 of them they are for the default and not default cases of ncv file creation. I don't know if there's something else that need to be changed but this should at least get your data inside the rrd file.
