For those who want to monitor a cups print server, here's a definition you can put in your bb-services file: [cupsd] send "GET /printers\r\n" expect "HTTP/1.1 200 OK" port 631 Alternatively, you could just use http://host:631/printers in your bb-hosts file. First off, I love Hobbit. A lot. I've been running it as a test in our department for almost 9 months now and I have convinced the boss to not renew the contract for our proprietary monitoring package (from a certain other Scandinavian country) in favor of using Hobbit. I just need to see if I can put donations on my corporate card. :) But I do have one last question after all of that effusion. Is anyone out there running dbcheck.pl and had this error: "Wed Jan 23 10:21:40 2008:ERROR on sid_name: Timeout connecting to DBI:Oracle:sid_name!" I know it isn't a network problem because the hobbit user can connect using sqlplus just fine and the oratns check is OK. The required Perl modules installed OK... I think. [hobbit] strange graph behavior - random machines & graphs

I'm almost certain now that this is a problem when Hobbit/rrdtool doesn't receive data when it is expecting it. In short, it seems that when a lack of data occurs, instead of assigning NaN or 0, this huge number is inserted into rrd database instead. I'm still not sure where this number is generated from, though.

Hi, I've read the question on the list...but can't find the answer. zonestat seems to work on client....but there's nothing on server ? I've followed the doc for installation...is there something to add in bbhosts ?

Still hoping this could be fixed soon? Having to scroll the bb2 page for hosts with long descriptions like contact and vendor info is a pain. If the list server allows it, I have attached an image of my bb2.html page. bb2 is our primary view and, as you can see from the image, tooltips pushes all the hobbit columns out of the view to the right. Tooltips are the text you see when you hover over items like the smiley's in hobbit? [hobbit] alternate page graphs custom menu

I had already tried the same thing but i don't succeed in getting hobbit to show the alternate templates for the current graphs. Even when i add the --templates=/wherever/you/want directive to this line in hobbitcgi.cnf ( i know this would change the main site also, it's just a test )# hobbitsvc.cgi options for a normal (current) status displayCGI_SVC_OPTS="--env=/usr/lib/hobbit/server/etc/hobbitserver.cfg --no-svcid --history=top"I also tried adding another variable ($ALT_OPTS) that i created myself in the .sh script that generates the page and then adding it to the bb-hostsvc.sh like this: . /usr/local/hobbit/server/etc/hobbitcgi.cfg exec /usr/local/hobbit/server/bin/hobbitsvc.cgi $CGI_SVC_OPTS $ALT_OPTSWhich basically also does nothing...Can anyone shed some light on this??? It seems that the actual cgi scripts that run when you click on an item use the default header sets, rather than the ones specified by your --templates or --pageset settings with bbgen. The first page on the pageset does use the custom_header and custom_footer files, but if you click on an item like "cpu", it runs a cgi script which generates a new page using the default templates instead of your custom ones. For example, most of the items call "bb-hostsvc.sh". which is just a wrapper that takes arguments and runs . /usr/local/hobbit/server/etc/hobbitcgi.cfg exec /usr/local/hobbit/server/bin/hobbitsvc.cgi $CGI_SVC_OPTS Now, optimally you should be able to put a custom $CGI_SVC_OPTS definition in whatever script generates your alternate pages, such that CGI_SVC_OPTS=--templates=/whatever/directory/with/your/new/templatefiles Unfortunately, even this doesn't seem to work. The key is to get your custom sub-pages to use custom templates for the graph pages and such that are dynamically generated by the CGI files. ntpdate question

Hi, before updating our hobbit server to version 4.2.0, I tested the ntp configuration with the bb-ntp-1_4.sh script on the client nodes. When I now configure the server to use the ntp network test instead, I realize that this doesn't work with most of our RedHat clients. I get the response ntpdate -u -q -p 2 a.b.c.d server a.b.c.d, stratum 0, offset 0.000000, delay 0.00000 29 Aug 10:53:26 ntpdate[3509]: no server suitable for synchronization found The network test works with all AIX clients and with older RedHat clients. The manual page of ntpdate on a RedHat machine says, that "the ntpdate program is to be retired from this distribution". Is there another way of testing the ntp synchronisation from the server side or do I still have to use the bb-ntp.sh script? Best wishes, Dirk Kastens

More Granular data than 300 second samples, duh!

One of the most common requests to the trending of data is "How do I make the charts graph data samples which are smaller than 300 seconds?" And the answer has been, you have the source, have fun. The original design decision that Henrik inherited was larrd should only be for capacity planning and NOT real-time performance analysis. Do one thing and do it well. I had a thought the other day, and I think we could possibly get the "best of both worlds." Instead of $ vmstat 300 2 (resulting in one 300 second sample) why not $ vmstat 5 61 (resulting in sixty 5 second samples) The data would still only be transported every five minutes, but contain more granular samples. This could not be done for all metrics, but many. This would also require the RRAs of the all the RRDs be re-made (export, re-create, import). But I've that's been on my mind anyway cause the original RRA structure was based on screen sizes for 800x600, instead of business requirements. Henrik, do you follow my thinking? It's kinda hard for me to believe it's taken me over five years to think of this! My biggest concern is not the technical details of the collectors and RRD/RRA restructuring, but inflicting resource usage on servers measuring themselves. $ vmstat 1 301 would definitely be a bad idea.
