Integrate rrd files into hobbit

Hi all, I was reading some posts about integrating external custom scripts into hobbit and was wondering is it possible to link existing rrd database files created by some other application and use hobbit for charting? If possible, what files do I need to eddit to make this work? The rrd file is created using rrdtool so another question would be about compatibility of the rrd file with the way the rrd files are being created in hobbit. Thanks in advance for any help. Igor

Changing BBDISP per test

Hi, for some reason we have two external hobbit monitoring servers. Now we got a couple of machines in a firewalled subnet, bbtest-net on both external servers can not access them. So I set up an internal server, that forwards all test results to one of the external servers. Unfortunately I need some of the test results at the other external server. From my mind I can remember something like: 10.0.1.1 hostA # BBDISP=10.0.0.1 conn http://hostA/index.html 10.0.1.2 hostB # BBDISP=10.0.0.1 conn http://hostB/index.html 10.0.1.3 host # BBDISP=10.0.0.2 conn http://host/index.html (with 10.0.1.0/24 the firewalled network and 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 as two external hobbit servers), but I can't find any references to this anymore. Can someone help me please? Is this possible at all or do I need to setup a second internal server? Hi Kevin. I don't think that there should be anything wrong with having two different versions of hobbit.. however I haven't tried it myself. This is a long shot, but hey .... Did you check /etc/default/hobbit-client ? As I understand your problem, you want one central server that contains everything that other servers in your organization monitor. (Useful when you have multiple clients on different sites that do not have access straight to the internet or the main hobbit server) This is something that I had to do a lot of investigation and testing to get it to function properly. The solution is a right mixture of hobbitd and bbproxy by using two ports on the server. Let me go into more detail. First the theory: You should have two ports open on the server, one for the bbproxy that will send out messages to two servers, localhost and the remote server. I chose 1984 (default) and 1985. So when the bbproxy receives a message from a client, it forwards it to the local host AND the external server, however there is one problem with this, all the network tests (done locally) get screwed up! The solution to this would be to have a different configuration file for those tests. Second, configuration settings: Start by copying your hobbitserver.cfg to another file, hobbitserverproxy.cfg, this enables the network tests to know where to send information. (The file should only have one ip address in BBSERVERIP, the eth0 IP. It should have the BBPORT 1984, it should contain BBDISP as $BBSERVERIP and BBDISPLAYS should be empty.) Now, on to editing the original hobbitserver.cfg. BBSERVERIP should be "127.0.0.1", BBPORT should be 1985, BBDISP should be "0.0.0.0" and BBDISPLAYS should be "$BBSERVERIP 12.34.56.78" (the ip of your external hobbit server). Now edit hobbitlaunch.cfg In the section [hobbitd], you should add '-listen=127.0.0.1:1985' to the CMD. The ENVFILE should stay the same. In the section [bbproxy], you should comment out the DISABLED line. Change the ENVFILE to the hobbitserverproxy.cfg file. Change the CMD and add '--bbdisplay=127.0.0.1:1985,12.34.56.78' (the ip of your external hobbit server) after the '--hobbitd' option. In the sections [bbnet] and [bbretest] you should change ENVFILE to hobbitserverproxy.cfg. Third, restarting hobbit: /etc/init.d/hobbitd restart Easy as pie :-) Hope you can use this information.. Server name hyperlinks and oracle

Greetings all, I was wondering if there is a way in Hobbit to make the server name hyperlinks (once clicked) connect to oracle database, run a query using the servername as the key and return the results back to the hobbit webpage? I know the bbgen can be passed -docurl=/bb-csvinfo.sh/ to grab info from a csv file, I was wondering if the same thing can be used to run a query on a database? bbwin max Message size?

I'm seeing an error with bbwin where the message description does not show up in hobbit. The description alone is about 1600 characters. It looks like this in hobbit... system: warning - 2008/10/30 11:03:13 - NETLOGON (5807) - n/a "" Is there a limit to the description size on individual log entries? -- Stewart -- Why are you unhappy? log monitoring for dmz hosts

Is there a way to allow dmz clients (using msgcache) to monitor non default logs? Normally you specify the log file to monitor in client-local.cfg and what to alert on in client-local.cfg. Next time the client sends data to the server it gets notified about a new log file to start monitoring. Using msgcache this never happens... I can probably do a dodgy trick and define what I want in logfetch.<clientname>.log on the dmz client in its $client/tmp/ dir. Is there a better way? If I change the dmz client to be a "local" client I then have to define thresholds on the local client, I would like to avoid that... Craig

This isn't quite the place for this, but you guys always give really good answers. :-) If I want to install rrdtool and snmpget on a really "stock" CentOS system, and yum can't find these things in the "usual" places... what do I need to do to get them? Thanks, Jon

Purple Colours

Hey, I have noticed that on my monitor that a lot of the tests are turning purple. I read in this thread (http://www.hobbitmon.com/hobbiton/2007/08/msg00051.html) that I should check the status of my hobbitclient.sh. I ran the status and it returned. /runclient.sh status Hobbit client (clientlaunch) does not appear to be running So I thought that would be my problem, I navigated to my hobbitclient.sh and tried to run it. wildcards or regex with SPLITNCV

I am working on setting up graphs to track an application. I have created a test that produces the output at the end of this message, I want to use SPLITNCV to handle it, but I don't want to be required to update the hobbit configuration and restart when the number of indexes in the system increases. Is there a way to define the SPLITNCV_testname variable in such a way that it can handle this? Also, I want to be able to set up the live_count and broker_count variables as counters, but be able to track negative changes as well as positive. I'm not sure if the DERIVE format mentioned in the docs will do negative changes. Normally, the value marches ever higher, but when there are problems, it will go down, and I want to see that on the graph. The _time variables and the rest of the _count variables will be gauges. Is this something that can be accomplished? If I have to set up all the graphs as gauge and deal with an ever-increasing value for the special entries, then I will do that. This is on the production system, running version 4.2. I started with the source package from the debian backports archive, then patched with the central BBWin patch and the allinone patch in addition to the existing debian-specific patches. I had to resolve a couple of conflicts, but got it to compile and run.
