PROC test question

Hi all, I am a hobbit newby. I have a question about the PROC test: is there a way to define a test about the presence of a particular proc executed by a particular user? I'm in a situation where I have some daemons that could be started by a lot of (machine)users and so I would like to check the user the proc run as. Thanks in advance Marco

I've added the perl script example that Henrik provided late January to the tutorials page on The Shire. http://www.trantor.org/theshire/doku.php/tutorials:ssmodule Hopefully, Henrik won't mind. (I may be "borrowing" some of Henrik's content for the other tutorials yet to be written...of course, if someone would like to volunteer the tutorials I'd be happy to consider them for addition). If you have other ideas about tutorials or FAQs, please let me know. I'm trying to make more time for the site (interestingly, I showed a manager from one of our other groups Hobbit in passing one day...he just happened to have been looking for an easy to setup/configure monitoring solution...he's been singing the praises of Hobbit since) =G=

big brother replacement

Hello list, It's that time of year again - we're looking for alternatives to our aging bb infrastructure - although it's been helped by the bbgen extensions, it is showing it's age, and is getting harder to support as time goes by. Of all the potential replacements we've looked at, I don't really like any of them - the commercial bb stuff is uninspiring, and their linux support is lacking. The other solutions tend to be heavyweight j2ee and database apps, or oddities like nagios. What I'd really love to find is something like an up-to-date version of big brother+bbgen, something like hobbit. Unfortunately, last I checked, hobbit still lacked a crucial capability that we depend on, the built-in bb failover mechanism. We have 2 data centers, several hundred miles apart, with bb servers in several lans at both sites. Each bb server has a twin at the other location, and they both monitor the servers in both data centers, but only one of the bb servers does reporting, as determined by the failover state. The bb failover has worked marvelously, and has kept bb firmly in place so far, despite the other advantages of hobbit. So, the $64 question: Is there anything in hobbit, or on the horizon, which will allow hobbit to serve as a drop-in replacement for bb, including the failover capability? http network test

I've got a few instances of a.b.c.d www.server.com # http://www.server.com/ and the http column shows up just fine, including the time the test took and a nice graph. The question I was just asked is, is it possible to specify "max response time", so that if the time shown is greater than N seconds I get a red flag?? I don't see a way to set that in the man pages for either bb-hosts or hobbit-client.cfg. Thanks, Ralph Mitchell

Memory and CPU usage by a process

Anyone worked on collecting data and generating rrd and graph for a particular process? I am trying to collect it for all the java processes on one system, which is easy for solaris, and then generate rrd and create graph. With little perl scripts, as provided in rrdtool website, I can generate the rrds as well using the data but how do I tell hobbit server to do the graph? no graphs from mpstat

I'm trying to setup mpstat to monitor systems with multiple cpu's, but the graphs are not created. Can someone help me with this ? The information is send from the client to the server and in the rrd data directory I have a file called mpstat.CPU2.rrd but there are no values in the last ds (see example) <ds> <name> CPU </name> <type> GAUGE </type> <minimal_heartbeat> 600 </minimal_heartbeat> <min> 0.0000000000e+00 </min> <max> 3.2000000000e+01 </max>  <last_ds> </last_ds> <value> NaN </value> <unknown_sec> 241 </unknown_sec> </ds> the contents of the hobbit_mpstat.hostname.send file is CPUs: 2 CPU0usr: 17.18 CPU0sys: 1.34 CPU0wt: 0.06 CPU0idl: 81.31 CPU1usr: 26.16 CPU1sys: 1.40 CPU1wt: 0.06 CPU1idl: 72.29 And I have copied the rrd_data.pl from the shire and can't find a typo in it.
