Hobbit Emails empty

I have a test Hobbit server running on CentOS 5.0 I am running Hobbit 4.1.2p2 and everything appears to be fuinctioning correct except alerting. When I trigger an alert, I get an email with only a subject and no body. I expected to get some information about the alert and the link to the monitored device. I am sure I am missing something fairly simple but I am new to Linux and Hobbit. Any Ideas? Kevin P. Doyle Sr. Systems Administrator Peak5

BBcombotest questions

Hi, I would like to use bbcombotest.cfg to define dependencies between services. I have done some testing and came up with a couple of questions: 1. The format of a combotest is basically name=value. Are there any known limitations to this scheme (e.g. max. length of "value")? 2. I tried to define a "combo of combos" but kept on getting errors. Is this something that is not supported? If it is not, I can still work around it by explicitly "expanding" the combos but then my "values" would be very long and hard to maintain. I was also wondering if I'd be hitting any limits (see 1.) 3. I would like to automatically disable application monitors during a software update and enable when the update is done. I was thinking of creating a "rollout" test and have all services depend on it using bbcombos. Then I could have the upgrade script disable this "rollout" only. For example: serviceCluster.serviceA_combo = (host1.serviceA + host2.serviceA) >= 1 || (host1.rollout + host2.rollout == 0) Has anybody implemented anything similar or have any other suggestions? LOG / FILE Hobbit client options : what are you using?

Hi, I'm wondering what SHOULD be in the LOG or FILE option on the Hobbit localclient.cfg file. Basically, I'm monitoring around 40 Unix/linux boxes and I wish to detect in "/var/log/messages", "/var/log/syslog", etc... all potential future problem on the box. As far I know, there is some basic rules like if the log file have been updated in the past minutes. I'm thinking to check for regular Syslog keywords suck as "Error" or "Warn". But I would like to know your custom recipe on this one please ;) Thanks by advance, LMJ

E-mail messages

We just had devmon stop working while we was out at lunch and had over 1600 e-mail messages come in. So I logged into the server and stopped sendmail, so that the e-mails would stop going out. I have everything up and working but need to know how I can clear out any left over messages so that when I start sendmail back up I won't get another 1600 messages saying recovered. After I get that resolved what is the best way to have hobbit only page out purple for the devmon process itself and not for any device devmon is monitoring? Thanks, -Josh

Service Results not updating completely with status changes

Hello Again, I have found another problem with monitoring Services using the BBWin client with the Hobbit server. Say for example I am monitoring the DNS service and everything is ok. The svcs page for that host will display something similar to: Mon May 12 10:55:04 2008 - Services OK DNS is automatic started req automatic started Name StartupType Status DisplayName DNS automatic started DNS Server However if the status of the monitored Service changes to stopped, then an alert is generated and the page turns red, however the result of the test displayed on the svcs page does not change it stays as: Mon May 12 10:57:04 2008 - Services NOT ok DNS is automatic started req automatic started Even though the data sent by the BBWin client has changed to Name StartupType Status DisplayName DNS automatic stopped DNS Server When it should reflect this instead: Mon May 12 10:57:04 2008 - Services NOT ok DNS is automatic stopped req automatic started So that we can quickly determine why Services are NOT ok. I indentifed the reason this does not happen is because the string variable which contains this information is set on startup of the Hobbit and the section which generates the result does not get run again until the daemon is restarted due to the the statement on line 2077 and 2078 of hobbitd/client_config.c result = (*walk)->rule->statustext; if (!result) { By commenting the result = (*walk)->rule->statustext; line, I was able to force the result to update when BBDisplay runs at its regular intervals. Before I implement this change within our production environment, is there a specific reason why the result variable does not get updated at every BBDisplay update? Or was this line put in specifically to address some kind of performance issue? I am not a C programmer and relatively new to the workings of Hobbit so any comment would be greatly appreciated. Build problem on Debian Etch for the may 7th snapshot

Hi, There seems to be a problem with the current snapshot ( http://www.hswn.dk/beta/hobbit-snapshot.tar.gz) and I can't get Hobbit to compile. Here's the error : eventlog.c:308: error: too many arguments to function sendmessage make[1]: *** [eventlog.o] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/temp/snapshot/lib' make: *** [lib-build] Error 2 >From the prototype in sendmsg.c, there is, apparently, a different number of arguments passed to the function. >From lib/eventlog.c : sendmessage("hobbitdboard fields=hostname,testname,color,lastchange", NULL, NULL, &bdata, 1, BBTALK_TIMEOUT) >From lib/sendmsg.c : sendresult_t sendmessage(char *msg, char *recipient, int timeout, sendreturn_t *reponse) I don't mind hacking the functions to make it work but is there something I'm missing here ? Monitor for a missing file

What is the best way to monitor for a missing log file? For example, it I want to make sure /var/log/messages exists, what is the best way to accomplish this in hobbit.? I searched the documentation and mail archives and saw examples to example contents, but I only what if the file is missing.
