NFS and shared clientlaunch.cfg files

Greetings fellow Hobbit-ers, I was recently tasked with monitoring 100+ solaris systems. Feeling undaunted I reached into my trusty IT toolbox and pulled out one of my favorite tools, Hobbit. What I encountered is as followed. The systems utilize NFS mounted directories. I installed the client files into /usr/local/ hobbit/client and voila! they were available to all of my systems. The issue that I encountered was that I wished to run different external scripts per client, but with a "shared" clientlaunch file I could not see how to do this. Has anyone encountered this specific issue before, and if so how did you address it? Does my, admittedly inelegant, solution pose any issues in relation to long term use? All, I would like to offer my thanks to Henrik for putting up with my foolish questions whilst I tried to figure out what was wrong. The problem was resolved by my removing the "DISABLED" line in the [bbpage] section of the hobbitlaunch.cfg file... I can't remember how many times in my line of work I have berated people for being stupid, I guess it's my turn now :-( . hobbit-clients.cfg question - graps not disappearing

Hi All, I've added a line to hobbit-clients.cfg to IGNORE every filesystem that has "fdev" as a pattern in its name (there are a bunch of them): DISK %/fdev/ IGNORE HOST=paris They've disappeared as expected, except for the graphs. How do I get rid of the graphs? Thanks! Sync hobbit configuration files with a database

Hello, in my experience is the maintenance of the Hobbit configuration files a rather time-consuming activity. From what I've read in the mail archives, there are a number of other people with the same experience. This is partly due to the fact that a modification, f.i. a new server or another administrator for a group of servers, is entered twice, once in a configuration database and once in the Hobbit configuration files, possibly by different people. Looking at the way the hobbit configuration files are maintained, there is a range of possibilities. One extreme is to maintain all configuration files by hand, and thus duplicating work. Moreover, there is a danger of incompleteness and of inconsistencies which are hard to discover. The other extreme is that the configuration files are generated completely using some configuration database. It requires of course that *all* the needed information is available in the database, including details like "this webserver reacts sometimes slow, thus use badhttp to prevent false alerts". Another possibility seems to be synchronization with a database, something which is somewhere between the two extremes. A synchronization is most probably a time-saver, but it also increases the quality of the configuration: the response a change is faster and a Hobbit configuration file which is as complete as the database is. Searching the archives I haven't found anything that can be used for a synchronization with a database. Are there any tools for this purpose, or are there any developments in this respect? BTW: At our site, the bb-hosts configuration files is generated partly: a view of the systems per administrator is generated, causing alerts to be sent to the actual, rather than the former, administrator. ver 4.3 and socket server

Hi folks, I want to make a simple demo that shows a proof-of-concept, and I need some advice and news of possible hobbit 4.3 ver socket connections. I have an embedded linux device and a linux server. I have installed both hobbit server and client ver 4.2 successfully. Now what I want to show is a socket server running on the client ( the embedded device) pushing data to the hobbit server, and thence to my browser on a third machine. I have built a crude socket server for the hobbit client that will do for the demo. So I need to listen on a socket at the server, and write the data to the web page. 1) Is there any fundamental issue that I need to know about, or can I just slog through the man pages and code and get what I want? 2) Any suggestions that would help me out? 3) I don't see CVS instructions for getting the tip of the tree- is there a beta 4.3 that might help me? thanks very much John

Why the white dots

I just installed a new client (4.20 with all-in-one patch) on a RHE4 server and, for the most part things look good. But I get white dots for "files", "msgs" "ports" and "procs". I didn't define any files or ports for the machine but I did put a few procs into "hobbit-clients.cfg" and did change permissions on the /var/log/messages files. (Note: I do have many other such servers being monitored without the white dots) Eric

FILE monitor doesn't like ownerid= entry

Hi, I'm setting up a files monitor and it doesn't seem to care for the OWNERID and GROUPID. My hobbit-clients.cfg entry: HOST=oracle FILE /dev/rdsk/ora_asm_disk1 red OWNERID=oracle GROUPID=dba TYPE=block MODE=660 The bb display output: /dev/dsk/ora_asm_disk1_eva1<http://hobbit/hobbit-cgi/bb-hostsvc.sh?CLIENT=fora11&SECTION=file:/dev/dsk/…> File is owned by user oracle - should be D=oracle File is owned by group dba - should be D=dba I searched the mail archive and found one instance where someone else had the same issue, but no resolution was posted.
