Hi everyone, some lawyers behind the movie company that produced the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy have contacted me about using the name "Hobbit" for the Hobbit monitor project. Fortunately, it seems that these people are actually quite sensible. They just want to make sure that there is no risk of anyone assuming that the "Hobbit monitor" has anything to do with the books, movies, merchandise etc. that they produce. So they've suggested that beginning with the next release, "Hobbit monitor" is renamed to either "Hobbi monitor" (without the 't'), or "H.O.B.B.I.T. Monitor" . Or something else, but they want to know if I pick something else. The full correspondance can be seen at http://www.hobbitmon.com/hobbitdocs/legal/ My current preference is to use the "H.O.B.B.I.T." version; this is most like the current name, and it would also fit with all of the current URL's used for various Hobbit functions (e.g. the "hobbitmon.sf.net" project page). I'm going to write the lawyers and get a definite OK that I can use "hobbitmon" in URL's and such; I doubt that I can get Sourceforge to accept a project named "h.o.b.b.i.t." since that would probably cause havoc with the DNS entries ... Well, with everything that already has gotten leveraged under monitoring (stock ticker, weather, California electrical power grid, etc); I expect someone is using Hobbit to monitor books, movies, and merchandise. Which may cause the movie lawyers to freak. I am assuming that the lawyers would not be extending the naming issue to the current way that the software is constructed. If it may extend to this level, I think the H.O.B.B.I.T alternate naming convention would cause some indigestion in the future when a Windows implementation (client and/or server)is fielded. It may be worthwhile to have a new name convention that is carried over into the convention used in the software itself. I always kind of like the Big Brother name with the follow on Perl implementation of Big Sister. How about a name to ensure a reaction from everyone: Big Mother-In-Law (just kidding Mothers'-In-Law). As for the comment in your other missive about your circumstances and the mail group: it's depressing how the Big Brother project has withered away. Mr. Croteau and Mr. MacGuire disappearing somewhere into the Quest commercial maw. Note1: There's nothing Hobbit-technical in this mail, so feel free to just hit "delete" if that is why you're reading the list. Note2: A few people are receiving this directly; don't worry, I haven't auto-subscribed you to the Hobbit mailing list. It's just easier to write this only once. I've received a couple of concerned e-mails over the past few days, asking me if there was "something wrong" since I haven't done any work on the Hobbit snapshots. The answer to that question is "sort of", but nothing truly serious. I guess I am just experiencing a mild degree of burnout(1) regarding Hobbit programming. Several factors at my for-pay work (I work for CSC in Copenhagen) have probably contributed to this; there's been some downsizing and organizational upheavals, and I've had to step in and support one of my colleagues who was very close to collapsing with severe stress. Some people just cannot say "no"; I can, and so I had to do some "no-saying" on her befalf while helping her get the projects finished. On top of that, I've had some vision problems the past 4 months. Vision on my left is rather bad because of a severe case of floaters(2), which will probably require some eye surgery later this year. This is quite annoying when working with a computer monitor, since the text appears blurred. Another complication has been a legal issue. I've had some e-mail exchanges with the people representing J.R.R.Tolkien / Lord of the Rings; however, this has been resolved in an acceptable manner. More on that in my next mail. Also, I have chosen to focus some of my time on taking care of myself - in the beginning of this year I decided that I was getting a bit fat and started going to a gym. I've never done fitnes or sports of any kind (being the true geek that I really am :-)), and losing 30 lbs does take some time and effort away from other activities. Contrary to what some people claim, I do NOT feel more energetic after a two-hour workout; I feel sleepy. However, that project is proceeding as planned and by the end of the year I should be in much better shape than I was at the beginning of 2008. So what do I do now? I feel that I've gotten some energy back and can start looking at coding some again. I need to wrap up the current code so it is in a reasonable state for all of you to start testing. I'm on my summer holidays for most of August, and the weather forecast for next week looks like there will be plenty of time to stay indoors. So I promise to produce an alpha release within two weeks. Then we can start playing with it and see how buggy it is. It would obviously be good to have more people involved in the programming. SCRIPT using expect

I have been asked by those who must be obeyed to see if I can get Hobbit to make a configuration change on a switch if a certain connection test goes red. Been trying to do so via an "expect" script. Script runs fine when run manually but fails from within Hobbit. First attempt failed because script apparently didn't wait long enough after spawning a telnet session. So I slowed it down and it got session started but apparently didn't "send" password. Has anyone done anything like this? Even if I get it to work, a few other questions arise. 1. Will it continue to run script if connection failure continues? 2. If I turn "RECOVER" on, can I run an alternate script upon recovery? Eric Jacobs

librrd.so.2 & librrd.so.4

I have just updated my rrdtool to version 1.3.0-1 and as expected I had some simple issues with librrd.so.2 which hobbit requires. rrdtool 1.3.0-1 doesn't have this - but it does have librrd.so.4. I have simply placed a symbolic link in the /lib to point from the .2 to the .4 and I have checked my hobbit install and it seems happy - all graphing working. Additionally I checked the library dependencies of hobbitd_rrd, hobbitd_larrd and hobbitgraph.cgi and they appear happy now. Does anyone know of any issues I could experience here before I roll out to my production server? Recently I have a DNS servers change on hobbit server. Ever since then http service checking are Tue Jul 29 14:56:47 2008 So far I have done following. 1. make sure dns is in /etc/nsswitch.conf host entry. 2. ping terminal.sub.test.com works. 3. /etc/resolv.conf is configured with new dns servers and their ips. 4. clean out "/var/opt/hobbitserver42/tmp/*..status files and restart hobbit server.
